Dr. Joseph Mangano serves as the program manager of the Excalibur program and oversees efforts designed to significantly enhance the mission set of airborne platforms through coherent optical phased array (OPA) technology. Fiber-based OPAs have near-term potential to achieve greater than 40% overall efficiency in a package compact enough for deployment on tactical airborne platforms. Successful integration of these systems would enable new and enhanced capabilities including laser radar (otherwise known as lidar), target designation, laser communications, power beaming, and aircraft self-protection.
From 1984 to2004, Dr. Mangano served as a Vice President and Senior Research Scientist at Science Research Laboratory a company he cofounded, where he led programs in the development of laser diode pulsed power; solid-state pulsed drivers for powering excimer lasers used in DUV lithography; electromagnetic shockline technology; and electrostatic accelerator technology used for positron emission tomography, dual-energy, digital-subtraction angiography and mammography, and boron-neutron capture therapy for treating cancers of the brain. While at SRL, Dr. Mangano authored the following inventions: (1) a fault detection algorithm for high power semiconductor junctions, (2) EUV and 1 nm soft X-ray sources used in next-generation Lithography, (3) a method of isolating adult hematopoietic stem cells using pulsed electric field cell selection technology, (4) a method of purging malignant cells from bone marrow transplants using pulsed electric field cell selection technology, and (5) a method of purging leukocytes and bacteria from platelet transfusions using high peak power x-ray sources.
From 1978 to 1984, Dr. Mangano served as the Program Manager, Division Director, and Deputy Office Director for DARPA where he led programs in excimer lasers, free electron lasers, particle beam technology, and blue-green submarine laser communications. He served on various scientific advisory groups within the Office of the Secretary of Defense, including the Defensive Technologies Study Team that provided planning for the formation of the President's Strategic Defense Initiative (now, the Missile Defense Agency).
Dr. Mangano earned S.B., S.M., E.E., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Plasma Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds five patents and has four patents pending. Dr. Mangano has written more than 40 publications in technical journals and numerous technical reports. He is an active member of IEEE, APS, Sigma Xi, and the Cosmos Club.
