The Pittsburgh MEPS was originally located in the old post office building on Grant Street in downtown Pittsburgh. A new federal building was built and dedicated to John F. Kennedy on November 16, 1964. It is located in the Grant Street and Liberty Avenue area of downtown Pittsburgh and has 23 stories, 2 basements, and 2 penthouse floors with stone, aluminum, and glass curtain walls. It houses 42 Federal Agencies. The consolidation of Federal activities in one building provides increased convenience and quality service to the public.

The Pittsburgh MEPS is one of a network of 65 MEPS located nationwide and in Puerto Rico.

A separate Department of Defense (DoD) agency, USMEPCOM is comprised of two geographical sectors and staffed with personnel from all military services.

The mission of USMEPCOM and the Pittsburgh MEPS is to process individuals for enlistment or induction into the armed services, based on DoD-approved peacetime and mobilization standards.

Three primary areas are considered in determining an applicant's qualifications for enlistment:

  • aptitude for military service
  • physical qualification
  • background evaluation screening
