FRANKFORT, Ky. -- More than $1.4 million in disaster grants and loans for eligible individuals in three Kentucky counties has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Kentucky Emergency Management Agency (KYEM).
Bell, Knox and Perry counties received a presidential disaster declaration for individual assistance on Sept. 1 to help Kentuckians affected by June's storms.
Following is a snapshot of the disaster assistance to date:
- Of the $1.42 million in assistance for housing and other needs:
- $1,253,977 has been approved for housing assistance. This money can be used for temporary housing as well as repair and replacement of permanent housing; and
- $210,158 has been approved for other needs assistance. This includes money for necessities such as clothing and household items, disaster-related medical and dental costs, car repairs that are related to the disaster as well as for moving and storage expenses.
- 595 registrations have been submitted for disaster assistance.
- 441 properties have been inspected for damages by inspectors for FEMA.
- 405 visits have been made to three disaster recovery centers.
"We encourage anyone affected by the June disaster to visit a disaster recovery center this weekend," said John Heltzel, director of Kentucky Emergency Management and commonwealth coordinating officer for Kentucky. "Recovery centers are an opportunity for affected residents in Bell, Knox and Perry County to meet face-to-face with FEMA and SBA representatives."
At the recovery centers, residents can ask questions and check on the status of their application. How-to literature about repairing a storm-damaged home as well as information about proven techniques to prevent and lessen damage from future disasters are available for free.
"Representatives at a recovery center can help people register with FEMA and provide assistance in filling out an SBA loan application," said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer W. M. Moore. "The recovery centers are conveniently located in each county to serve disaster survivors."
