Windsor, Conn. -- To help you meet the costs of complying with local floodplain management requirements, the National Flood Insurance Program includes Increased Cost of Compliance (ICC) coverage in all new and renewed Standard Flood Insurance Policies. If your home or business is located in a special flood hazard area and becomes substantially damaged by any peril, you may be required to meet certain building requirements designed to reduce future flood damage when you rebuild or repair.
Windsor, Conn. -- The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) provides grants to States and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures after a major disaster declaration. Authorized under Section 404 of the Stafford Act and administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, HMGP was created to reduce the loss of life and property due to natural disasters. The program enables mitigation measures to be implemented during the immediate recovery from a disaster and is activated when the president declares a disaster.
Windsor, Conn. -- While flood insurance is not mandatory for homeowners outside of a high-risk area, anyone can be financially vulnerable to floods. People outside of high-risk areas file more than 25% of NFIP claims and receive one-third of disaster assistance for flooding. Residential and commercial property owners who are not located in high-risk areas should ask their agents if they are eligible for the Preferred Risk Policy, which provides affordable flood insurance protection, starting as low as $129 a year. The NFIP offers flood insurance to homeowners, renters, and business owners if their community participates in the NFIP. Participating communities agree to adopt and enforce ordinances that meet or exceed FEMA requirements to reduce the risk of flooding. Windsor, Conn. -- Federal Emergency Management Agency officials are clearing up some misconceptions about the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which offers federally-backed flood insurance to property owners and renters in communities that participate in the program. “The NFIP is a critical component to help homeowners and businesses recover from flood damage,” said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Stephen M. De Blasio, Sr. “The more that people know about it and utilize it, the easier it will be for them to rebuild their homes and communities.”
At a recent Hazard Mitigation Grant Program briefing in Watertown, Conn., FEMA program specialists advise town and village officials, as well as businessmen and residents, on project eligibility and FEMA procedure. FEMA provides funding in the form of grants to States following federally-declared disasters.
WINDSOR, Conn. -- During Tropical Storm Irene and the recent severe storm of Oct.29-30 resulting in extended power outages, some Connecticut residents chose not to evacuate from their homes fearing they would be separated from their pets. The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) emphasize that during emergency evacuations, leaving pets should be an absolute last resort and encourage owners of pets and livestock to learn about which shelters allow animals during emergencies.
