The San Juan MEPS was originally organized in April 1955 as the Armed Forces Examination and Induction Station (AFEIS) San Juan and was a unit of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command (USAREC). AFEIS San Juan relocated to Rodriguez U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Brooke on December 22, 1958.

In September 1970, AFEIS San Juan was redesignated as the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station (AFEES) San Juan. AFEES San Juan was reorganized under USAREC on July 1, 1976. USMEPCOM left USAREC on October 1, 1979 and became a stand-alone DoD agency. AFEES San Juan became subordinate to Eastern Sector, USMEPCOM.

AFEES San Juan was redesignated as MEPS San Juan on January 1, 1982. MEPS San Juan was redesignated as the San Juan MEPS on October 1, 1983. On April 5, 2013 San Juan MEPS moved to this location.

The San Juan MEPS is one of a network of 65 MEPS located nationwide and in Puerto Rico.

A separate Department of Defense (DoD) agency, USMEPCOM is comprised of two geographical sectors and staffed with personnel from all military services.

The mission of USMEPCOM and the San Juan MEPS is to process individuals for enlistment or induction into the armed services, based on DoD-approved peacetime and mobilization standards.

Three primary areas are considered in determining an applicant's qualifications for enlistment:

  • aptitude for military service
  • physical qualification
  • background evaluation screening
