CAPT Steve ‘Horse’ Wieman is a native of Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics.  After commissioning, he attended Surface Warfare Officers School in Coronado, California and served aboard USS Henry B. Wilson   (DDG-7) and USS Berkeley (DDG-15) as Boilers Officer and Main Propulsion Assistant before his acceptance to the Naval Flight Officer training program in October 1991.  After primary flight training in Pensacola, Florida he was selected to fly the E-2C “Hawkeye” and earned his Wings of Gold in 1993.

CAPT Wieman’s initial tour in the E-2C was with the ‘Bluetails’ of VAW 121 aboard USS George Washington (CVN-73) during her maiden deployments in 1994 and 1996.  His first shore tour was as Assistant Operations Officer aboard Airborne Early Warning Wing Atlantic before he returned to sea duty in 1998 where he served as the Operations and Maintenance Officer while assigned to the VAW 112 Goldenhawks aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74).

CAPT Wieman earned his Masters Degree in National Security Affairs from the Naval War College in Newport, RI in 2001 and also attended the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia before reporting to Headquarters, United States European Command in Stuttgart, Germany where he served as the lead strike planning officer in the Operations Directorate (J3) from 2002 to 2004.  He returned to the ‘Bluetails’ of VAW 121 in July 2005 as the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer, and deployed as part of CVW 17 aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73). 

CAPT Wieman remained on sea duty and served as the Operations Officer aboard USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75), which deployed twice to the Arabian Gulf and earned 3 consecutive Battle ‘E’ awards during his time aboard.  He later served as the COMNAVAIRLANT Force Safety Officer (N45) in Norfolk, until he reported for duty aboard NAF Atsugi, Japan as Commanding Officer from Dec 2011 to July 2014.  He assumed duties as Deputy and Chief of Staff, Commander, US Naval Forces, Japan in August of 2014.
