Lieutenant Commander Jay N. Hyler hails from a Navy family.  After moving several times throughout his childhood, he graduated in 1995 from Montgomery High School in San Diego, CA.  Following high school, LCDR Hyler enlisted in the U. S. Navy with a Submarine Missile Technician (Advanced Electronics Field) contract.
    After meritorious advancement during basic training at Recruit Training Command and graduating at the top of his class in Strategic Weapons ‘A’ School in Groton, CT, LCDR Hyler cross-rated to serve as a Navigation Electronics Technician aboard USS HENRY M. JACKSON (SSBN-730) (Gold Crew) in 1997.  LCDR Hyler earned his Enlisted Submarine qualification during the first half of his first strategic patrol.
    LCDR Hyler was selected for the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection (BOOST) program; He was then commissioned as a Naval Officer under the NROTC program at the University of Washington, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.   He then received orders to NAS Pensacola, FL for training as a Student Naval Aviator.
    He completed Aviation Pre-fight Indoctrination and Primary Flight training at NAS Whiting Field, FL, and was then selected for lateral transfer into the Navy Human Resources Community.  In 2006, he was assigned to Navy Recruiting District San Francisco as a Division Officer and Officer Programs recruiter for the Northern California/San Francisco Bay areas.
    In 2009, LCDR Hyler attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA and earned a Master of Science degree in Management (Manpower Systems Analysis) and Joint Professional Military Education (JPME 1).
    LCDR Hyler reported to Navy Recruiting District Seattle in 2011, to serve as the Assistant Operations Officer and Operations Officer.  During this tour, he also earned his Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification.
    LCDR Hyler took command of Transient Personnel Unit (TPU) Puget Sound on 10 December 2014.
    His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards).
