YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) – Customers at Navy Region Japan’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) and Child and Youth Program (CYP) facilities may have recently experienced duplicate debit and credit card charges due to a computer system error.
A system update began on Saturday, Sept. 24 but was stopped the next day when some customers noticed erroneous charges. CNIC Treasury has identified all the erroneous charges and has notified Bank of America, which is in the process of reversing the charges.
The issue involved a software update. There is no evidence of large scale hacking or identity theft. Customers do not need to take any action to have their accounts refunded. Customers should be fully refunded in the next few days.
The lack of communication, information, basic customer service and support from all the parties involved is appalling (i.e., CNIC, MWR, Bank of America, Navy Federal etc...). Total and blatant incompetency with no responsibility taken. Absolutely scandalous and worrisome.
According to CNIC, work with the banks first, but if they refuse to reverse charges which obviously weren't your fault, the Navy will pay them. We encourage you to contact CNIC through their hotline at (844) 697-4357 or email mwr_creditcard_FAQ.fct@navy.mil
However, have some empathy man. First, you dont know peoples situations. Second, for some people these charges were in the thousands.
Dont be a jerk and holler and say people should just have more money for when they are unknowingly charged hundreds to thousands of dollars.
I dont even have access quickly (within hours) to the bulk of my saved money as it immediately gets invested.
I do carry a credit card for emergencies on larger than a grand scale.
So say it happened to be that card that was affected and needed to be replaced, I might be a little SOL for a couple days.
Just next time, dont act all high and mighty. Empathize. Realize everyone's situation is different.
