Weight Handling Equipment

NAVFAC P-307

Safe and reliable naval shore weight handling is essential for fleet readiness.

The Naval Crane Center (NCC) leads the Navy's shore activity weight handling program by providing engineering, acquisition, technical support, training and evaluation services. Their goal is to achieve safe and reliable weight handling programs throughout the Navy. They place emphasis on regular promulgation of accident lessons learned, training initiatives, and periodic audits of naval shore activities to support the prevention of more serious accidents.

The guiding document for administrative and technical guidance for personnel with responsibility for management, inspection, testing, certification, alteration, repair, operation and/or use of weight handling equipment for the Navy is NAVFAC P-307, Management of Weight Handling Equipment.

The weight handing program is audited every two years by the NCC. Approximately 2 months prior to an audit, the NCC sends out a list of information and documentation that they may request during the audit.    Activities with WHE should use this document as a "self- assessment tool" well before it is requested by the NCC Audit Team.
