Working in or Near Wilderness Areas, Wildlife Refuges, National Forests & National Recreation Areas

In Region III, there are approximately 200 state parks. This does not include the various trails, national parks, wildlife refuges, national forests, and historic sites! As you can imagine, these parks cover enormous areas. In West Virginia alone there are over 80,000 acres of state park land. Both disasters and your recovery actions may have an effect on part of this land.

Federal agencies are responsible for insuring that Wilderness Areas, Wildlife Refuges, and National Recreational Areas remain unimpaired for the future use and enjoyment as wilderness and to provide protection of these areas for the preservation of the character of each wilderness area, refuge, or recreational area. If a project is within, near, or adjacent to a designated wilderness area, coordination is required.

Access to any debris removal from power line right-of-ways within a National Forest or use of the National Forest road system will require coordination with the Forest Service.
