Charles M. King

Charles M. KingMike King is the Superintendent at the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) in Anniston, Ala. As Superintendent, Mike provides executive level management and leadership for the CDP as it provides unique, hands on training to more than 45,000 emergency responders a year from local, state, and tribal agencies. He is also responsible for operations of the CDP’s 124-acre campus, which is home to the only training facility in the country where civilian responders can train in a toxic agent environment and the nation’s only hospital training facility dedicated solely to preparing the healthcare, public health, and environmental health communities for mass casualty events related to terrorism or natural disasters.

The CDP is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Preparedness Directorate and offers 47 courses for both resident and non-resident students. Courses at the CDP campus in Anniston, Ala. feature hands-on training at the Chemical, Ordnance, Biological and Radiological (COBRA) Training Facility, where responders train using nerve agents GB (Sarin) and VX, as well as non-pathogenic strains of anthrax and ricin. The Noble Training Facility is a former Army hospital that is now a premier training venue for health and medical professionals preparing for mass casualty incidents.

Mike joined the CDP in 2005 as the Director of Operations and Support. In this position he was responsible for support operations, facility management, security, safety, engineering, chemical surety, emergency response, information technology, and budget operations. Mike became Deputy Superintendent in October 2008 and assumed responsibility as the Chief Operating Officer for oversight and management of the CDP. On December 16, 2013, Mike was sworn in to the Senior Executive Service as the CDP Superintendent.

Mike retired as a lieutenant colonel from the United States Army after serving 21 years in the Military Police Corps. During his military career, Mike worked various law enforcement, security, force protection, and training assignments at all organizational levels of the Army. He also served as the Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Army and was the Deputy and Chief of Operations for the Joint Task Force providing Department of Defense support to the 1996 Summer Olympics. After his military service, Mike worked for seven years as a contract consultant to the Army developing, coordinating, and managing security and force protection programs for a major military command with subordinate communities and operational sites in Southwest Asia.

Mike earned a Bachelor of Science in Forest Resource Management from the University of Georgia and a Master of Science in Business Administration from Boston University.

Mike is from Macon, Ga. and is married with three children and five grandchildren.
