Wyoming hosts first public-private sector cyber security summit
Private industry partners, federal, state and local government officials and information technology professionals attended the Wyoming Cowboy Cyber Summit in Casper, Wyo., on Feb. 18 and 19, 2015.
More than 80 people participated in the first-ever summit to address cybersecurity issues and begin the process of developing a resilient public/private partnership in Wyoming.
The culmination of the summit was a tabletop exercise. Officials from the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center were on-hand to participate in the response and recovery of the simulated event. The simulated scenario was a cyber-attack on the hospital, which caused network latency, data degradation and loss, malware, and building management systems malfunctions. Each step in the scenario was discussed in the three-hour exercise.
Other participants for the exercise were the Federal Bureau of Investigations, Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, Laramie County Emergency Management, Wyoming Office of Homeland Security and the Wyoming Department of Health.
Patrick Gray, from the Center for Internet Security and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) in Albany, New York, addressed the group and described the MSISAC’s role in threat mitigation, prevention, protection, response and recovery for state, local, territorial and tribal governments.
Derek Meyer, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team (ICS-CERT) contributed valuable information to the group. Meyer provided information on incident response and tactical mitigation information to protect against emerging threats.
A cybersecurity working group consisting of private industry, local municipalities and IT professionals is being developed as a result of this summit.
