Lt. Col. David Holz, 39th Maintenance Squadron commander, took command of the 39th MXS June 21, 2013, Incirlik Air Base, Turkey. (U.S. Air Force photo by Senior Airman Nicole Sikorski/Released) Leadership decisions: When to Fire Someone
Being a squadron commander has been an eye-opening experience and I'm thankful for the opportunity.  I've gotten the chance to lead some of the Air Force's best Airmen at the edge of the frontier.  But what should you do as a leader when you're not leading the best Airmen and your organization's performance is suffering?  As a leader, how do you

Most cases of bicycle theft at Incirlik Air Base are due to individuals leaving their bikes unsecured or unattended. The 39th Security Forces Squadron released that only six out of 21 bicycle thefts reported were secured by a locking system; five of those six were secured in a highly visible location, like the dormitories. (U.S. Air Force photo by Cory W. Bush/Released) I got a new bike, now it's gone
Many members of Incirlik Air Base use bicycles as their primary means of transportation during their assignment here. They're easy to ride, store and you don't need to cough up a bunch of money to be able to use it. On top of the paper work, registration fees and the months of waiting for my car to actually arrive here, I chose to opt out and like

The Noel Baba Musuem is a house where St. Nicholas was believed to have lived and died in Demre, Turkey. Every year on Dec. 6, the day St. Nicholas died, there is a service in St Nicholas’ Church in Demre. Dec. 6 is also the first day of a week-long festival held there. (U.S. Force photo by Staff Sgt. Caleb Pierce/Released) Ask Mehmet: Mehmet, do Turks celebrate Christmas?
You might have already noticed that shops throughout Turkey decorate their windows with pine trees, snow balls, red stockings, statues and pictures of St. Nicholas. Turks, who are Moslem, may seem like they're observing Christmas like Christians. But, they aren't celebrating Christmas, they're marking the New Year. Many parties are held on the New

Default Air Force Logo Airman mother, daughter: A true testament of resiliency, victory
There are those who feel the word resiliency has become just another word or program in the Air Force. I, on the other hand, truly believe resiliency is a way of life. I know from  personal experience that if applied, resiliency will help you overcome adversity and be victorious on the other side. The four resiliency pillars of being mentally,

I have never met someone who regretted traveling. In fact, their only regret was that they failed to travel more during their time overseas because travel made them a different person than they were before they left.As I look back on my past experiences as a whole, one fact stands out above the rest: traveling has shaped the person I am

Let's stop talking about diversity, start talking about readiness
The good news is that we're making great progress as we seek to make our Air Force a more diverse and capable force.  The bad news is that too many Airmen are tired of talking about it, and too many Airmen are coming to work every day feeling that their career prospects are limited by the color of their skin, sexual orientation, or gender. Our

Lajes RU Fit The R Word
We spend a lot of time talking about resiliency these days. If you're like me, you have to ask yourself the obvious question: Why is the Air Force obsessed with this subject, and why do they keep throwing new slogans, programs and ad campaigns at me? The simple fact is that the Air Force is worried about our Airmen. There are a lot of reasons to

How three letters erased my career
I lost everything. Gone. Finito. Well, everything on my computer to be exact. But trust me, it was a lot.I had recently compiled all my work files onto my hard drive in preparation to burn them to discs before I depart my current base. This included four years of work continuity, personnel documents, templates, my entire portfolio of work at this
