SAFECOM Charter Updates and Elections

Over the past few months, the SAFECOM Governance Committee meticulously worked to establish a new SAFECOM Executive Committee (EC) governance structure, revise the SAFECOM Charter, and assist in holding SAFECOM leadership elections. Revisions to the SAFECOM Charter were based primarily on the Governance Committee’s recommendations to establish the new SAFECOM EC governance structure, which were approved by the EC in July 2016.

Keynote Remarks By Secretary Johnson At The International Bridge Ceremony

Today Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson delivered keynote remarks at the annual International Bridge Ceremony in Laredo, Texas. The event, also known as the “Abrazo Ceremony,” is part of a 119-year-old tradition to celebrate George Washington’s birthday. It is highlighted by two children from the U.S. side and two children from the Mexican side who meet midway across the Lincoln-Juarez bridge and hug.

Statement By Secretary Jeh C. Johnson Regarding End Of Enhanced Ebola Screening

In 2014, the world faced a public health emergency with the outbreak of Ebola across West Africa. In response, President Obama declared Ebola a national security priority and directed a government-wide aggressive response to limit the risk of the disease reaching the Homeland. Working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Homeland Security quickly established an effective screening process by funneling 94 percent of passengers originating from Ebola-affected countries into five designated U.S. airports. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) also implemented measures at all other U.S. ports of entry to conduct enhanced screening of the remaining six percent of travelers. During this time not a single traveler exhibiting Ebola symptoms is known to have entered the country undetected.

Zika Virus: DHS Response Plan

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which includes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is the U.S. Government’s lead for efforts to respond to the Zika virus. As the White House announced on Monday, the President is also seeking more than $1.8 billion in supplemental funding from Congress to address the virus and our government’s response efforts.
