Gate closes, Jan. 15

HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Holloman Air Force Base temporarily cordoned a section of Highway 70 and evacuated several base homes Jan. 15 in response to a possible threat to individuals within the area.

This response was part of routine emergency operations.

The emergency precautions were enacted after to a commercial vehicle containing an unknown substance, was identified while undergoing regular inspection before entering the base. The area was evacuated until Explosive Ordnance Disposal responders could ensure the safety of the area.

"Holloman's Security Forces recognized a potential threat, understood the dangers presented and visualized the tasks required to keep Holloman safe," said Maj. Jeffery Day, the 49th Wing Security Forces commander. "Our Defenders provided a world class response that ensured a safe environment for Holloman and the surrounding community."

The cordon was active from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Holloman personnel worked with Soaring Heights to make sure all residents within the affected area were safely evacuated in a timely manner.

"Security Forces did an amazing job alerting our maintenance team to the possible danger," said Lacey Purcele, the Soaring Heights public affairs officer. "They worked with the fire fighters on base to evacuate each of the houses within the cordon."

Once the scene was declared safe by 49th Security Forces, regular highway and base activity was resumed.

"Our Security Forces and first responders did an amazing job," said Col. Robert Kiebler, 49th Wing commander. "The speed and professionalism demonstrated makes me confident we will be ready for situations that could carry real danger. Our number one goal is to always be ready to protect our military members and their families, and that is why we go to such lengths when any possible threat is involved. We appreciate everyone's understanding during this event."
