WASHINGTON— Today, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson met with Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales to discuss President Morales’ priorities for his administration and the two countries’ continued cooperation on a number of shared economic and security issues.

Secretary Johnson and President Morales addressed joint efforts to combat transnational organized crime; enhance air, land, and maritime border security; and promote safe, legal, and orderly migration. They also reaffirmed their commitment to prevent the dangerous journey of illegal migration to the United States and to humanely repatriate migrants, consistent with due process.

Secretary Johnson and President Morales also discussed the importance of the Department of Homeland Security-Guatemala Ministry of Government Executive Leadership Group, which is an effort by both countries to strengthen their strategic bilateral partnership and enhance collaboration on a range of shared security-related priorities. They also highlighted the strong ties between the United States and Guatemala and the need to address economic and security issues together and with other partners in the region.
