James N. Calbough


Sergeant Major James Calbough was born in Trenton, Michigan. He graduated from Southern High School in Louisville, Kentucky in 1990. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and reported to MCRD, Parris Island, SC on 18 December 1990, for recruit training. Upon his graduation as a Private First Class in March 1991, he reported to Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger and then attended his MOS school of Technical Draftsman and Construction Surveying (Engineer Assistant) in Fort Leonard Wood, MO from April 1991 to December 1991 during which time he was promoted to Lance Corporal.

In January of 1992, Lance Corporal Calbough reported for duty to 7th Communications Battalion on Okinawa. After his one year tour, he received orders to Aviation Ground Support Element in Twenty-nine Palms, CA in December 1992 were he held the billet of Engineer Assistant NCOIC. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 June 1993 and Sergeant on 1 March of 1995.

In May 1995, Sergeant Calbough reported to 8th Engineer Support Battalion for duties and assumed the billet of Engineer Assistant NCOIC. In December 1996 until June 1997, he deployed to Haiti as part of the U. S. Support. He attended Combat Engineer NCO Course in Mar 1998 and received the secondary MOS of 1371, Combat Engineer and also attended the Engineer Assistants Chiefs Course in May 1998.

In July 1998, Sergeant Calbough reported to MCRD, Parris Island, SC for Drill Instructor School. Upon graduation in October, he was assigned to C Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion where he held billets as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, Series Gunnery Sergeant and Company First Sergeant. He was promoted to SSgt on 1 February 1999. In October of 2000, he was selected as the Drill Instructor of the Year and promoted meritoriously to Gunnery Sergeant on 2 January 2001.

In November 2001, Gunnery Sergeant Calbough reported to 2d Combat Engineer Battalion and filled the billets of SNCOIC for the Marksmanship Training Unit, Company Gunnery Sergeant for H & S and then Company C and attended the Sapper Leaders Course and Engineer Operations Chief Course. Upon promotion to First Sergeant, his assignments included Company First Sergeant for Company A, Engineer Support Company, and Company C. During his tour, he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) attached to Regimental Combat Team 1, in February 2003 until May 2003. He again deployed to OIF from August 2005 to April 2006 in support of Regimental Combat Team 8 and later Regimental Combat Team 5. Upon return, he reported to Marine Combat Training Battalion, School of Infantry East.

In May 2006, First Sergeant Calbough was assigned to Company F, Marine Combat Training Battalion, School of Infantry (E) as the Company First Sergeant until his promotion to Sergeant Major on 1 April 2008.

In May 2008, Sergeant Major Calbough reported for duty with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152 where he served until January 2010. While with VMGR-152, he participated in Operation Caring Response in Myanmar, Cobra Gold 08’ and 09’ in Thailand, Talon Vision 08’ and Balikatan 09’ in the Philippines, and Air Warrior 08’ in Malaysia,

In January 2010, Sergeant Major Calbough reported for duty with 9th Engineer Support Battalion. He deployed with 9th Engineer Support Battalion to the Helmand Province, Afghanistan, ISO of Operation Enduring Freedom 10.1 from

May until December 2010. Upon return, he participated in Forest Light Exercise 2011 with the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force in mainland Japan in February and March 2011.

In May 2011, Sergeant Major Calbough was selected and assigned as the Director of the Okinawa Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy and completed his tour in March 2013.

In March 2013, Sergeant Major Calbough was selected and assigned as the Sergeant Major for U. S. Marine Corps Forces, South and concluded this assignment in April 2016.

In May 2016, Sergeant Major Calbough assumed his current duties as the Sergeant Major for 3D Marine Logistics Group.

His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (w/ 2 gold star), Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (w/ 2 gold stars and combat distinguishing device), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (w/ two gold stars), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
