Readout Of Secretary Jeh C. Johnson’s Participation In G6 Meeting Of Interior Ministers In Rome, Italy

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, along with U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, participated in the 2016 G6 Meeting of Interior Ministers in Rome, Italy from October 20-21, 2016. The ministerial included Interior Minister counterparts from the six largest European Union countries (France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, United Kingdom) and provided an opportunity to discuss the current security situation in Europe, migration flows, border security, and cybersecurity, as well as increased cooperation among the countries on these issues.

The recent shooting in Orlando reminds all Americans that the threat of violence exists in our communities. The ideology or motivation behind each attack may vary, but in common we have seen an evolution toward more independent, unaffiliated attacks inspired by extremist groups. Extremist individuals can find inspiration and encouragement through social media with geographically dispersed but like-minded extremists.

In December 2015, I announced the revision of the Department of Homeland Security’s National Terrorism Advisory System, or “NTAS,” to include an intermediate level NTAS “Bulletin.” We then issued a new NTAS Bulletin at the same time. The duration of the December Bulletin was six months, and expires tomorrow.

As the President just stated, the deadly shooting in the early morning hours in Orlando is the worst in U.S. history. As the President also stated, it was an act of terror and an act of hate. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. One of the most powerful images I can show people is the front page of the Washington Post in December of 2014.  A photo of two parents, both with downcast eyes and the quote, "We were just frozen," when they learned their three teenagers had run away from home to join Islamic State militants in Syria. This is part of a growing number of Americans who are attempting to travel to Syria or Iraq to join the Islamic State.  And we anticipate more as recruiters from the Islamic State target youth on social media.
