Readout of Deputy Secretary Mayorkas' Trip to Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS— Today, Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas traveled to New Orleans to participate in a series of employee engagements with Department personnel. These engagements are a part of the Department’s continued efforts to recognize the achievements and selfless service of DHS personnel who preserve our freedoms and protect the homeland with integrity, vigilance, and respect.

Deputy Secretary Mayorkas led an employee town hall to thank DHS personnel for their service and for responsibly implementing the Department’s various missions. He also joined U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials at the Port of New Orleans for a hands-on briefing of passengers and cargo entering the port. Deputy Secretary Mayorkas underscored that the men and women of DHS are the Department’s greatest asset and that he, along with Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, are committed to engaging with employees to ensure that they feel valued and that their hard work is recognized and rewarded. 

While in New Orleans, Deputy Secretary Mayorkas met with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. He underscored his confidence in the TSA workforce and thanked them for the work they do every day to screen a record number of passengers at airports across the United States and keep the traveling public safe.

Earlier today, Deputy Secretary Mayorkas received an update from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on the severe weather affecting the region.
