Every 60 seconds, 20 people in America are physically abused by an intimate partner in America, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Over the course of a year, that adds up to more than 10 million men and women.

October is recognized as National Domestic Violence Awareness month and is meant for people to stand with survivors of domestic violence and extend hope and healing to all who need it.

In recognition of this month, Laughlin Air Force Base is taking a stand against this issue.

A domestic violence awareness information booth is open in the clinic throughout the month, multiple community engagement initiatives will be taken, and the Laughlin tower is lit purple in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness month.

“It’s easy to forget about [domestic violence] if we don’t talk about it,” said Casey Molleson, 47th Medical Operation Squadron family advocacy outreach manager. “What we do brings domestic violence to light.”

Family Advocacy offers communication classes to help prevent volatile situations, as well as educates bystanders on how they can assist.

It is important for Laughlin members to know what resources are available if ever needed: the family advocacy office, Military and Family Life Counseling, Airman and Family Readiness Center, and chaplains are just a few of many resources.
