Sergeant Major Newcomb enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in July 1990.  After completion of Recruit Training at Parris Island in October 1990, Sergeant Major Newcomb was transferred to Albany, GA. to attend the Supply Basic course where she received the MOS of 3051, Warehouse Clerk.  She was also meritoriously promoted to the rank of Private First Class.

In December 1990, she was transferred to 3rd Supply Battalion, Okinawa, Japan where she worked as a warehouseman in the storage section.  While assigned to 3rd Supply Battalion she was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.

In January 1992, Sergeant Major Newcomb received orders to 2nd Supply Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where she worked as the S-3 Administrative Chief, as well as, the Status of Resources and Training (SORTS) clerk, and the S-2 Security Chief.  While assigned to 2nd Supply Battalion she attended the Corporal’s Leadership Course in 1995.  Later, she also attended the Sergeant’s Course in 1998 while still attached to 2nd Supply Battalion.

In July 1999, Sergeant Major Newcomb was transferred from the 2nd Supply Battalion S-3, to the 2nd Supply Battalion, Battalion Supply section where she worked as the Warehouse Chief, Supply Chief, and Supply Officer.  

In July 2001, Sergeant Major Newcomb received orders to Drill Instructor School, MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina.  Upon completion of Drill Instructor School, she attended the Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor Course where she became a green belt MCMAP Instructor.  While serving as a Drill Instructor, Sergeant Major Newcomb filled the billets of MCMAP Instructor, Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Series Chief Drill Instructor in November Company.  She also served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Company Gunnery Sergeant for Special Training Company.

In May 2005, Sergeant Major Newcomb executed orders to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where she served as the Warehouse Chief.  Sergeant Major Newcomb deployed with 8th Engineer Support Battalion, serving as the Supply Chief in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom IV (OIF).  In 2007, Marines were pulled from 8th Engineer Support Battalion to deploy with 6th Engineer Support Battalion.  Sergeant Major Newcomb deployed with 6th Engineer Support Battalion, as the Headquarters and Support Company First Sergeant, as well as the Supply Officer in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom VI (OIF).   During her tenure at 8th Engineer Support Battalion, Sergeant Major Newcomb attended the SNCO Advance Course.
