LTPP 1999: A Year in Review at 2000 TRB Annual Meeting
The annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), to be held in Washington, DC, next month, will include a special session on the status of and plans for the long-term pavement performance (LTPP) program. The session, scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on January 10, 2000, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, will feature four presentations.
- Charles Churilla of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will lead off with "LTPP in 1999: The Year in Review," which will highlight the data resolution process, an exhaustive effort to determine the availability and validity of the program's test sections and their data. This task, concluded in 1999, "has led to an emphasis on doing a better job with SPS [specific pavement studies] traffic data," said Churilla.
- Michael Murphy of the Texas Department of Transportation will discuss "Planning for LTPP Data Analysis." His remarks will center on the development of the LTPP Strategic Analysis Plan Objectives-both its contents and the process of producing it, from brainstorming by an expert task group in May 1999, through development, to its eventual adoption as the guide for LTPP analysis.
- Michael Darter of ERES Consultants will speak on "Making Pavements Better: Significant Findings from LTPP Data Analysis." The LTPP analysis studies, which began under the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) in 1990 and have continued under FHWA since 1994, have served as an invaluable information source for understanding how pavements perform. Darter will highlight this wide-ranging topic, using the document, "Findings from LTPP Data Analysis Studies, Summary List 1990-1999."
- Monte Symons will focus on "They're Putting the Data to Work: An Overview of LTPP Data Usage." His presentation will cover the DataPave 2.0 software, among other examples. DataPave 2.0 provides two to three times the amount of data contained in the previous version and includes functional enhancements.
LTPP and other SHRP-related activities will also be covered at the SHRP/LTPP coordinators meeting on January 9. For more information on the coordinators meeting, contact Neil Hawks at TRB, 202-334-1430 (fax: 202-334-3471; email: nhawks@nas.edu). For more information on the LTPP session, contact Charles Churilla at FHWA, 202-493-3142 (fax: 202-493-3161; email: charles.churilla@fhwa.dot.gov) or Monte Symons at FHWA, 202-493-3144 (fax: 202-493-3161; email: monte.symons@fhwa.dot.gov).
