The I.G. Brown Training and Education Center

Old headquarters buildingWho we are

The Training and Education Center was established in 1968 as the I.G. Brown Professional Military Education Center, named in honor of the first Director of the Air National Guard, Maj. Gen. I.G. Brown. It had long been the dream of Brown to establish a noncommissioned officer academy within the Air National Guard. He envisioned a center located on an Air National Guard base and staffed by Air National Guardsmen. Today, it is called the I.G. Brown Training and Education Center and is the heart of leadership training for the Air National Guard. More than 4,200 students per year attend a variety of professional military education courses and continuing education classes.

U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. I. G. Brown, was the first Director of the Air National Guard and the founder of the I. G. Brown Training and Education Center.

The founding story

In 1966, General Brown was invited to speak at a noncommissioned officer academy graduation at Hamilton Air Force Base, Calif. He was impressed by the enthusiasm and professionalism of the staff, particularly the Vice Commandant, Chief Master Sgt. Paul H. Lankford, and by the students. This event planted the seed of an idea that the Air National Guard should have a noncommissioned officer academy to increase the professionalism of the enlisted corps. After a great deal of planning, discussing, persuading and convincing, the Air National Guard Noncommissioned Officer Academy was founded at McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base, Knoxville, Tenn. Brown hired then Maj. Edmund C. Morrisey of the Texas Air National Guard and the same Chief Master Sgt. Paul H. Lankford who had so impressed him to be the two leaders to make this new venture successful - two choices showing Brown's ability to judge leadership and character. The first class graduated in 1968.
