Jose Sanchez, director of Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, presents a service award to ERDC’s Dr. Lyn Hales, program manager for Monitoring Completed Navigation Projects, for 55 years of service to the nation Oct. 12. Hales was also presented with a Bronze de Fleury Medal from the Army Engineer Association for a lifetime of outstanding service and mentorship.

A U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory team recently ran a relay from the White Mountains to the coast of New Hampshire, covering a distance of approximately 200 miles. The team, participating in the Reebok Ragnar Reach The Beach Relay, battled sore legs and sleep deprivation running 203 miles, covering the distance in 27 hours, 42 minutes finishing 60th out of a total 475 teams participating.

San Francisco District’s Cynthia Fowler adjusts the air bubbles’ curtain at the Engineer Research and Development Center’s 33,000 gallon fish flume for invasive and native species research, as her adviser, Environment Laboratory’s Research Ecologist Dr. Christa Woodley, observes. As one of eight district researchers and scientists selected for ERDC University’s inaugural class, Fowler is participating in a six month collaborative research project at the Vicksburg, Mississippi, campus. As part of her master’s degree program, she is studying the effects of hydraulic hopper dredging on all fishes with EL Advisers Dr. David Smith and Woodley.

Gerardo I. Velazquez, a research civil engineer in the Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, has been awarded the 2016 Great Minds in STEM Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corp.’s Professional Achievement Award in Civil Engineering.

Dr. Jacqueline A. Richter-Menge of the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in Hanover, New Hampshire, received an honorary doctorate of science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks May 8 at UAF’s 94th commencement ceremony. Richter-Menge is a leader in polar climate physics, focusing on research of the Arctic sea ice cover from Alaska to Greenland. She currently serves as the principal investigator for major research programs with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation.
