Quantico PMO, fire department participate in story hour at base library March 30, 2015 — The children and parents who attended last week’s story hour at the base library got a special surprise — guest readers from the Provost Marshal Office and fire department. Drawing a larger crowd than Santa and Mrs. Claus in December, Deputy Police Chief Joseph Riley and firefighter/medics Thad Williams and James Welch took turns reading to the children and handing out goody bags filled with firefighter coloring books, crayons and other treats. Methods of Entry School students face ultimate tests before graduation March 30, 2015 — Nothing in his background of close quarters combat prepared Cpl. Tyler Zeller for the challenging test assignment given him during his final week as a student at the Methods of Entry School. Armed with limited initial information, Zeller took his turn serving as the Lead Breacher for a Marine team charged with violently breaching the door of a house where armed suspected Afghan insurgents held captives while planning attacks against American service members. Zeller had just 90 minutes to assess the simulated mission, assign specific tasks to his eight-man team and rehearse before executing the mission. MORE

Marine Corps civilian police officer recognized for valor by Prince William County Chamber of Commerce March 30, 2015 — Officer John Covey, of the Marine Corps Base Quantico Provost Marshal Office, was recognized for valor in a ceremony at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on March 18. Covey received a bronze medal for valor from the Prince William County Chamber of Commerce. Twenty other officers from throughout Prince William County were also recognized for various lifesaving acts and exceptional investigative skills that protected the community from dangerous criminals. Transitioning service members meet with prospective employers March 30, 2015 — There are resumes, and then there are federal resumes which must be tailored altogether differently if it’s a government job you’re seeking. That information was among the many helpful tips that Cpl. Nikita Primm, warehouse chief, Headquarters and Service Battalion, took home with her after stopping by Friday’s Job Fair at the Clubs at Quantico and Crossroads Event Center. The hiring event, which was put on by Marine & Family Programs and Transition Readiness, was designed to bring transitioning service members face to face with potential employers. MORE

Director of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center visits Naval Health Clinic Quantico March 30, 2015 — Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Clark, director of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, visited Naval Health Clinic Quantico Friday. The general came to show his support for the enhanced, multi-service market concept of military healthcare. A multi-service market is a geographic area where medical facilities from two or more branches of the military have overlapping areas of service. MORE

Quantico Bowling Center hosts mother-son bowling event March 30, 2015 — The Quantico Bowling Center hosted a mother-son bowling event on Friday. The event offered mothers and sons the chance to bowl for an hour for $5 per person, with shoe rental included in the cost. Ordinarily, the charges are $3 per person per game and $2.75 for shoes. The special event allowed unlimited bowling for an hour, rather than a single round or set number of games. Daughters were not turned away, despite the title of the event, and they also qualified for the discounted price. MORE

Recreational use of marijuana OK in DC, but still forbidden by USMC March 30, 2015 — Recreational use of marijuana is no longer forbidden in the nation’s capital, but it remains a punishable offense within the U.S. Marine Corps.
