Marines use military skills to obtain civilian credentials
November 26, 2014
— Last month the Department of the Navy released the Marine Corps Credentialing Opportunity Online. The Marine Corps COOL website provides a listing of civilian licenses, certifications and job opportunities that are related to each of the enlisted military occupational specialties. Melora McVicker, education services officer at the Voluntary Education Center aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, said that the program can benefit both active duty and reserve Marines.

New guidelines released for off-base child care fee assistance program
November 26, 2014
— Off base child care subsidy will no longer be given at a flat rate of $250 per child but will be based on Total Family Income, according to Marine Administrative Message 570/14. “Marine families with a lower income will benefit with an increased amount of fee assistance applied to their monthly child care cost,” said Belynda Smith, Children, Youth & Teen Programs section head, Marine and Family Programs Division.

OCS grad follows grandfather’s footsteps into USMC

— What began many years ago as a little boy’s distant dream became a heartwarming reality on Tuesday when Steve Brackeen Turunc graduated from the Officer Candidates School and became a Marine Corps officer. Ten weeks after arriving at Marine Corps Base Quantico with the intent of following his grandfather’s footsteps, Turunc was among the 169 candidates to receive the gold bars signifying their status as newly minted second lieutenants before a large throng of friends and family at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

MCAF/ Quantico realignment in place

— They remain two distinct entities, but Marine Corps Base Quantico and the neighboring Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico have officially partnered up with smoother daily operations in mind. Per the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding that went into effect on Oct. 1, MCAF has been realigned from Marine Corps Installations East to Marine Corps Installations National Capital Region. According to the agreement, MCAF, which is the home of Marine Helicopter Squadron One, is now considered a subordinate installation to MCINCR. Nothing has changed for HMX-1.

Activities commemorate 50th anniversary of Vietnam War start

— The Department of Defense and Marine Corps Base Quantico have teamed up to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War. As a DOD commemorative partner with plans to observe the war’s beginnings, Quantico has pledged to hold events starting next year to honor the many service members, their families and civilians who supported the American effort in Southeast Asia.
