Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation receives $1.25 million donation

— Shannon Schuyler says the PwC Charitable Foundation’s recent donation of $1.25 million to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is but a small token of the gratitude America has for the sacrifice of its service members. “We can’t thank them enough for how they have served us,” said Schuyler, the PwC Charitable Foundation’s principal, corporate responsibility leader and president of PwC Charitable Foundation Inc.

National Intelligence University opens academic center aboard MCBQ
January 29, 2015
— National Intelligence University, whose main campus is located at the Defense Intelligence Agency Headquarters aboard Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., has opened an academic center aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico. NIU offers a bachelor of science in intelligence, a master of science of strategic intelligence, a master of science and technology intelligence, and numerous certificates of intelligence with concentrations in different countries and topics. The NIU Quantico Academic Center, as the academic center is called, currently offers the MSSI and a selection of certificates, according to QAC Director Kevin Logan

World War II vets headed back to Iwo Jima, Young Marines make it possible
January 29, 2015
— Medal of Honor recipient Herschel “Woody” Williams will be among the 15 World War II veterans headed back to Iwo Jima next month, and he has the Young Marines to thank for it. The veterans will be among those making the Iwo Jima Association of America’s “Reunion of Honor” trip next month. The weeklong trip, which will also include a stop in Guam, will take the aging warriors and several of their family members back to the site of some of the fiercest combat of the entire Pacific Theater.

Renovations at Crossroads Inn aboard Quantico nearly complete
January 29, 2015
— The Crossroads Inn aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico is nearly done with the first phase of a multi-year renovation. The efficiency wing, which consists of rooms and suites with kitchenettes, is the first wing of the hotel to be renovated, and to date, 41 of 48 rooms have been fully renovated. General Manager Almaz Dawson expects the remaining rooms to be completed by the end of January.

Snow plows and the shovel brigade: preparing for winter weather

— The average annual snowfall for the town of Quantico is 14.1 inches, according to weatherbase.com. In comparison, Fargo, North Dakota, receives an average of 52 inches annually, and Syracuse, New York — America’s snowiest city — receives an average of 126.3 inches of snow annually, according to a recent article by Weather.com.

36th Commandant of the Marine Corps releases planning guidance

— Gen. Joseph Dunford, 36th commandant of the Marine Corps, released his official planning guidance Friday, continuing the tradition begun by the 34th Commandant, Gen. James Conway. The purpose of the document is to present the commandant’s goals, priorities of work, and intent or desired end state for the duration of his tenure as the Corps’ senior leader.

Pack your antacid: time for the third annual MRE cookoff

— Most everyone has heard of the “Iron Chef,” and many are also aware that it takes a cast iron stomach to enjoy MREs (Meals Ready to Eat, the military’s field rations). The National Museum of the Marine Corps will pit would-be iron chefs against the infamous MREs in the third annual MRE Cookoff, Feb. 7 at noon.

Arlington, Quantico National Cemeteries seek volunteers to remove Christmas wreaths
January 23, 2015
— Now that the holidays are past, Arlington and Quantico National Cemeteries are seeking volunteers to assist in removing the wreaths generously donated by Wreaths Across America and the Sgt. Mac Foundation in December. According to a news release from Wreaths Across America, the foundation donated 230,000 wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery, which was enough to cover every grave.

Commissary, Exchange parking lots closed to through traffic
January 23, 2015
— Last February, the Commissary and Exchange parking lots were closed during morning rush hours of 5:30-8 a.m., to prevent drivers stuck in the heavy morning traffic on Russell Road from cutting through the parking lot, bypassing traffic and getting back onto the road from Purvis Road. That restriction was lifted late last year.

Single Marine Program provides free weekend transportation around base via shuttle
January 23, 2015
— Beginning Saturday, Marines will find it easier to get around base on the weekends, thanks to a new shuttle service run by the Single Marine Program. The shuttle service was inspired by the desire of base commander Col. David W. Maxwell to meet the needs of Marines on the west side of base, particularly those who are not authorized to keep vehicles on base.
