Opportunities

Established in 1958 as part of the U.S. Department of Defense, DARPA pursues opportunities for transformational change rather than incremental advances. It does so collaboratively as part of a robust innovation ecosystem that includes academic, corporate, and governmental partners. To fulfill its mission, the Agency relies on diverse performers from throughout this ecosystem to apply multi-disciplinary approaches to both advance knowledge through basic research and create innovative technologies that address current and predicted practical problems through applied research. The list of selected opportunities displayed below is provided for convenience. For a complete listing of DARPA opportunities please visit the FedBizOpps website. More

In addition to program-specific opportunities, each DARPA technical office maintains an “office-wide” Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) that covers a range of technical areas of interest to each particular office. The office-wide BAAs are refreshed on an annual basis and offer a mechanism for researchers to reach DARPA with ideas that they feel could be valuable to national security.

Forensic Social Science Supercolliders (FS3) Request for Information (RFI)
DSO
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO) is requesting information on new ideas, approaches, and capabilities for developing interactive simulations that can be used to calibrate the validity of different social science research methods and tools in drawing “strong inference” about causal mechanisms that can lead to emergent complex behaviors in human social systems.

Hierarchical Identify Verify Exploit (HIVE)
MTO
he DARPA Microsystems Technology Office HIVE program is soliciting research proposals for the development of a generic and scalable graph processor specializing in processing sparse graph primitives. The program includes the development of chip prototypes, development of software tools to support programming of the new hardware, and design of a system architecture to support efficient multi-node scaling.

Stochastic Augmented Graph Analytics (SAGA) Request for Information (RFI)
MTO
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Microsystems Technology Office (MTO) is seeking information on novel hardware and software approaches for calculating continuous time varying probabilities functions. Specifically, we are seeking information on novel hardware architectures, software algorithms, and programming tools necessary to process data natively as random variables.

Extreme Optics and Imaging (EXTREME)
DSO
The Defense Sciences Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative research proposals in the area of optical systems capable of extreme performance and/or capabilities, which utilize Engineered optical Materials (EnMats). Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, and/or systems. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI)
I2O
The goal of Explainable AI (XAI) is to create a suite of new or modified machine learning techniques that produce explainable models that, when combined with effective explanation techniques, enable end users to understand, appropriately trust, and effectively manage the emerging generation of AI systems.
11/4/2016
RadioBio Request for Information (RFI)
DSO
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO) is requesting information on the state-of-the-art in experimentally observing, modeling and understanding communication between biosystems exploiting electromagnetic (EM) waves from low frequencies (kHz) to high frequencies (THz).
11/7/2016
Hallmark Tools, Capabilities and Evaluation Methodology (Hallmark-TCEM)
TTO
The objective of the Tools, Capabilities and Evaluation Methodology portion of the Hallmark program is to develop and validate analytic and human-centric technologies for enabling the full spectrum of military space enterprise command and control capabilities for the commander.

Reconfigurable Imaging (ReImagine)
MTO
DARPA is soliciting research proposals to demonstrate multifunctional imaging sensors that are reconfigurable through software. Proposers will build around a common digital framework that can be customized for specific applications. Both passive and active modes are desired. Also of interest are proposals that develop adaptive algorithms that optimize the operation of a reconfigurable sensor in real time to optimize information collection.
