Ambassador Alexander M. Laskaris, U.S. Department of State
Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement,
Ambassador Alexander M. Laskaris serves as the Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, U.S. Africa Command.

Ambassador Alexander M. Laskaris assumed duties as the Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, United States Africa Command, in January 2016.  Prior to his current assignment, he served as the 20th United States Ambassador to the Republic of Guinea from September 2012 to November 2015.

A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Ambassador Laskaris' early assignments include service as vice consul in Liberia from 1991 to 1992; political and economic officer in Botswana; political officer in Angola from December 1997 to October 1999; desk officer for Rwanda and Burundi from 1996 to 1997; as advisor on African affairs to the U.S. ambassador to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations from 1999 to 2001; and as a member of the State Department's Policy Planning Staff from 2001 to 2003.

He served twice as Deputy Chief of Mission: in Burundi from 2003 to 2005, and in Kosovo, from 2006 to 2008.  He led the U.S. Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ninewa Province, Iraq from 2008 to 2009 and then served as Consul General in Erbil, Kurdistan Region of Iraq from June 2010 to July 2012.

Ambassador Laskaris earned a B.S. in International Relations Service at Georgetown University in 1989 and later an M.A. in Strategic Studies at the U.S. Army War College. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, he worked as a high school English teacher in South Africa.
