SEPTEMBER:
Prostate Cancer Toolkit

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among American men. Because this type of cancer grows slowly, it is important to know when to consult with your healthcare provider and when to get tested. The resources below will help create the necessary awareness for prostate cancer.

What do you need to know to effectively raise awareness about prostate cancer?

  • The symptoms for prostate cancer vary. Some men show none at all, while other men may have:
    • difficulty starting urination
    • frequent urination (especially at night)
    • weak or interrupted flow of urine
    • blood in their urine or semen

Most states are ahead of schedule in hitting their targets for older adults.

  • All states, however, need improvement in the following areas:
    • Flu vaccination within the past year
    • Getting a pneumonia vaccine
    • Mammography within the past 2 years
    • Current smoking
  • Risk factors for prostate cancer include:
    • Being 50 years old or older
    • Being African-American
    • Having a father, brother, or son who has had prostate cancer
  • What do you need to know to effectively raise awareness about prostate cancer?
    • The most common screen tests for prostate cancer are:
    • Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test
    • Digital rectal exam (DRE)
