Sergeant Major Johnson 
Sgt. Maj. Thomas L. Johnson 


Sergeant Major Johnson enlisted in the Marine Corps and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina in December 1991. Private First Class Johnson attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Upon completion, he was assigned the MOS 5811, Military Police and later completed MOS school at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas. He then reported to the MWSS-373, MCAS El Toro, California for duty. While there he deployed to Mombasa, Kenya for “Operation Continue Hope.”

Lance Corporal Johnson then received orders to MWSS-171, Iwakuni, Japan where he preformed duties as Flight Line and Patrol Supervisor. He was promoted to Corporal in June 1994 and served as Desk Sergeant.

In May 1996, Sergeant Johnson reported to Security Battalion, MCB Quantico, Virginia. He held billets as Patrol Supervisor, Watch Commander and later Platoon Sergeant.

In December 1998, Sergeant Johnson was ordered to MCRD San Diego, California for Recruiting School. Upon graduation, he reported to Recruiting Station Richmond, Virginia as a canvassing recruiter. In June 1999 he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and in October 2000 he was selected as Recruiter of the Year, 4th Marine Corps District and was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant meritoriously. Gunnery Sergeant Johnson was then assigned as the SNCOIC at RSS Roanoke, Virginia.

In April 2002, Gunnery Sergeant Johnson reported to Headquarters and Service Battalion, Okinawa, Japan, where he served as Traffic Court Supervisor and PMO Mobile Training Team SNCOIC.

In June 2003, he reported to Marine Corps Security Forces, Training Company, Chesapeake, Virginia, where he served as the SNCOIC Physical Security and Tactics Section, training over 3,500 Marines in Security Operations, Interior Guard Tactics, Non-Lethal Weapons, and Technology Equipment. He was later assigned as Company Gunnery Sergeant and was selected for promotion to First Sergeant.

In March 2006, First Sergeant Johnson reported to 3rd Battalion 6th Marines Regiment, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for duty. He was assigned as Company First Sergeant, Headquarters and Service Company where he deployed to Al Anbar Province, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In September 2007, First Sergeant Johnson was assigned to Weapons Company and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In January 2009, he was then transferred to Marine Corps Engineer School, Camp Lejeune and assigned to Headquarters and Service Company.

In November 2009 he was selected for Sergeant Major and reported to MCAS, New River and posted as the Sergeant Major for HMLA-167. In July 2012, SgtMaj Johnson was transferred to Combat Logistics Battalion 23, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington for duty as the I&I Sergeant Major. He currently serves as the Sergeant Major for Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base Quantico.

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal(2 gold stars), Combat Action Ribbon, and Good Conduct(7th award).
