The Airspace Manager performs all administrative duties related to the coordination and safe operation of all aircraft within the SUA and DEMO/MOAs. He serves as the primary liaison for all squadrons/aircraft desiring to conduct air operations aboard MCB Quantico.

MCB QUANTICO SUAs & DEMO/MOAs

MCB Quantico's Special Use Airspace (SUA), R-6608 and DEMO MOA, is surrounded by highly congested airspace recognized by the FAA as one of the busiest in the country. When active, the SUA abuts Potomac TRACON (PCT) Class Bravo Airspace, DC Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) and is in close proximity to Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico's Class Delta airspace.

Aircraft supporting ground elements or conducting individual squadron training shall contact Airspace Manager NLT 24 hours prior to execution of training at 703-784-4494. Pilots will verify they are familiar with Quantico's SUA and impact areas. The Airspace Manager will verify concept of operations, pass any applicable information to both the using unit and the Range Scheduling Section, and enter any pertinent information in the RFMSS request.

ADVISORIES

MCB Quantico Range Complex is a VFR (Visual Flight Rules) operating area. The requirement to "see and avoid" other aircraft is the responsibility of the pilot. All aircraft operating in Quantico's SUA shall remain alert to any advisory calls or instructions at all times. MCB Quantico RCF will provide traffic advisories to the maximum extent possible. Advisories will range from proximity to other aircraft, impact areas and any other applicable information. All aircraft cleared into Quantico's SUA must remain in VMC (Visual Meteorological Conditions). Additionally aircraft operating within Quantico's SUA must remain vigilant in their employment of VFR to ensure avoidance of other aircraft. This is especially important in the DEMO MOAs as non-associated VFR aircraft are authorized to transit through the MOAs.

SPECIAL FLIGHT RULES AREA

Washington, DC Metropolitan Area Special Flight Rules Area (DC SFRA) is that area of airspace previously known as the DC Metropolitan Area Air Defense Identification Zone (DC ADIZ). Washington, DC Metropolitan Area Flight Restricted Zone (DC FRZ) is within and part of the DC SFRA. It is strongly recommended that all pilots flying under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) within 100 NM of the DCA VOR/DME complete special awareness training for the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. This training is mandatory for all pilots that fly under VFR within 60 NM of the DCA VOR/DME (14 CFR parts 61 and 91, effective February 9, 2009). This training is available in the Aviation Learning Center at http://www.faasafety.gov.

ENTRY PROCEDURES - ENTERING QUANTICO SUA/SFRA ABOVE 3,000 FT:

1. Contact POTOMAC TRACON (PCT) 124.65 or 343.7
2. PCT will switch to Quantico Arrival (NYG) on 127.05 or 290.375 or 346.25 for SUA clearance and squawk.

ENTRY PROCEDURES - ENTERING QUANTICO SUA/SFRA BELOW 3,000 FT:

1. Contact NYG directly on 127.05 or 290.375 for SUA clearance and squawk.
2. Contact MCAFQ when air station is open. When air station is closed, contact (PCT).

COMMUNICATIONS

• Aircraft shall maintain positive two way communication with range control at all times.
• UHF- 323.7
• Aircraft not associated with ground training, shall provide radio checks every 30 minutes and contact range control with each request.
• Aircraft are not required to make radio checks if supporting a ground element. The Range Safety Officer (RSO) or Range Officer in Charge (ROIC) will provide aircraft status updates through their radio checks to the RCF.

AIRSPACE SCHEDULING

• Units and Squadrons can schedule all training requests through the Range Scheduling Section via RFMSS. 1-time events per annum can be done directly through the Range Scheduling Chief (703)784-6412/5502 and must also be coordinated through the Airspace Manager at 703-784-4494.
• Due to agreements with the FAA, all requests for airspace must be submitted NLT 14 days from the event with Range Scheduling Section.

WEATHER / ALTITUDE REQUIREMENTS

• Day weather minimums for flight operations within the SUA are 2,000 feet and 5 miles visibility for fixed-wing and 1,000 feet and 3 miles visibility for rotary-wing aircraft.
• The minimum altitude for aircraft flying over residential areas is 1,500 feet AGL, unless otherwise specified in the designated MOA.
• The minimum altitude for fixed-wing aircraft within the R-6608 airspace is 500 feet AGL.
