LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The Public Assistance process for damages inflicted by Hurricane Gustav has begun in Arkansas. The Public Assistance (PA) program is helping state and local governments as well as certain Private Non-Profit organizations (PNPs) recover from the disaster. The storms and tornados that blew through the state September 2 - 9 left debris in streets, damaged public buildings and shut down or damaged electric cooperatives.

They can damage or destroy bridges, highways, public buildings, parks, hospitals and water treatment plants - not to mention leave tons of debris or disrupt communications and emergency services. In addition to the many assistance programs available to help people recover from disasters, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers a helping hand to communities, county and state agencies and some private non-profit organizations that suffered storm and tornado damage.?
Following is a summary of key federal disaster aid programs that can be made available as needed and warranted under President Bush's major disaster declaration issued for Arkansas. Assistance for the State and Affected Local Governments Can Include as Required:
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security?s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced that federal disaster aid has been made available for the state of Arkansas and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area struck by severe storms and flooding associated with Hurricane Gustav during the period of September 2-8, 2008.
