August 29, 2011 - News Release

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency closed its disaster recovery centers in Barre and St. Johnsbury on Monday, Aug. 29th in order to address the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. These centers will not reopen any time soon. They were originally scheduled to close permanently on Thursday, Sept. 1, but because of the recent flooding in the state of Vermont from Hurricane Irene, FEMA officials are assessing the need to redirect resources and personnel within the state.

August 28, 2011 - News Release

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The danger of additional flooding in the wake of Hurricane Irene has led to a one-day closure of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster recovery centers in Barre and St. Johnsbury on Monday, Aug. 29. The Centers will reopen at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30 and remain open through Thursday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. when they will close permanently. The centers were opened to provide face-to-face resources for residents of Caledonia and Washington counties after a presidential declaration for flooding on May 26 -- 27, 2011.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Vermonters in Caledonia and Washington counties have less than two weeks to apply for federal disaster aid for the flooding which occurred May 26th to May 27th. Sept. 6th is the deadline to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for housing assistance and grants and with U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for low-interest loans.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Visitors to Vermont's fairs this summer and fall will be seeing something new in addition to the animals, carnival rides and fried dough. Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be on hand to offer residents information about rebuilding their flood-damaged homes, and how to make them better able to withstand future disasters.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- With many municipalities and nonprofit organizations busy repairing and rebuilding after this spring's flooding, federal and state officials want to remind them that there may be additional funding for projects that reduce or prevent future damage.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency will reduce the hours at its temporary assistance office in St. Johnsbury as it begins to wind down some of its flood recovery efforts. The Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in St. Johnsbury will remain open Mondays through Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but will no longer be open on Sundays. Those who were affected by the May 26-27 storms and flooding can visit the center or call FEMA's Helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362).

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The heavy rains and flooding in Vermont this spring have prompted some communities to take matters into their own hands when it comes to preparing for the next flood. The town of Peacham is preparing to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program, a move that will give its residents access to federally-backed flood insurance as well as allow the town to qualify for additional aid in the event of a flood.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- With only a few days left for most Vermonters to apply for financial assistance for damage or losses from this spring's floods, the state is already nearing a historic milestone. Nearly $4 million in federal disaster aid and loans has been approved for those affected by the spring storms and flooding that occurred April 23rd to May 9th and May 26th to May 27th, the first time since 2002 that FEMA assistance has been given directly to Vermont individuals and families rather than municipalities.
