Hunting at West Point Lake

Alabama and Georgia Disabled Hunt                                                         5 year old, mature, 10 point whitetail deer harvested

The US Army Corps of Engineers manages approximately 10,000 acres of hunting land at West Point Lake. Every year rangers at West Point manage these lands with prescribed fire, the planting of food plots and dove fields, road maintenance, and timber harvests to diversify habitat. To hunt USACE property, hunters must have a valid state hunting license as well as a USACE hunting permit which can be obtained from the West Point Project management office by phone with credit card, by mail, or by simply stopping by and purchasing one in person. The cost for the permit is $25.00. Hunters are NOT permitted to use center fire rifles on USACE hunting lands. They may use shotguns, muzzleloaders, rim fire rifles, and bows. Hunting areas and the types of weapons that may be used in that area are designated on the West Point Lake Hunting Map. The use of buckshot is prohibited on USACE lands, as well as trapping. These restrictions, along with other USACE rules and regulations, are enforced on top of existing state hunting regulations.

The US Army Corps of Engineers also leases approximately 10,000 acres to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to manage as West Point WMA. The West Point WMA is actually comprised of three areas, West Point WMA, Dixie Creek WMA, and Lakeside WMA. This land is managed under GA DNR guidelines so some rules and restrictions are different from USACE managed lands such as the use of center fire rifles. To hunt the WMA at West Point hunters must have a valid state hunting license as well as a WMA stamp which is purchased through the GA DNR. Hunters do not need a USACE permit to hunt the WMA, and likewise do not need a WMA stamp to hunt Corps lands. Game and nongame species that may be hunted on both USACE hunting areas as well as the WMA include deer, turkey, dove, quail, waterfowl, rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, bobcat, opossum, feral hogs, and coyotes. Feral hogs and coyotes may be taken during any open season with the appropriate weapon for that season, except for small game season when hunters are allowed to use black powder weapons to hunt feral hogs.

The seasons are also different for both areas, where as USACE property is open for the entire hunting season, the WMA has specific dates for deer hunting and special quota hunts for turkey. The WMA also hosts special coyote hunts throughout the year. More information for the West Point WMA hunting dates can be found on the GA DNR's website at http://www.georgiawildlife.com/.
