Scott Boras gave his annual review of the Mets' spending habits while talking with reporters today at the GM's meetings. "To finish the lap in the pool, you always have to swim in the deep end to get back to the shallow end," Boras said. "The deep end is a place that the Mets are regularly visiting now. I think they have a good chance of completing their lap." Boras joked that he's shifted from his old supermarket theme to more of a "resort dynamic" in discussing the Mets' payroll.

Facebook post Monday from ex-MLBer Willie Mays Aikens: I am a little embarrassed to publicly make this announcement. I better change that statement. I am totally embarrassed to publicly make this statement, but I know it might help someone get out there and vote. My name is Willie Aikens and I am 62 years old. Believe it or not, but today I VOTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY ADULT LIFE ON THIS PLANET. I had plans to drive to Seneca, South Carolina today, but I stayed an extra day in Missouri so I could vote. Missouri doesn't allow early voting, so I had to do an absentee vote. I won't be in Missouri tomorrow, so I was allowed to vote today. What a relief that was to vote for the first time ever in my life. Voting in America is a privilege that we all have as Americans, so please go to the polls and cast your vote. If you don't vote, don't complain about how our country is being managed. Every vote counts, so get off your butt and go vote. May God bless our next president of the United States of America.

Heard from a major-league source who characterized the Red Sox's interest in Carlos Beltran this way: "They want him badly." Might boil down to whether Beltran wants more than a one-year guarantee. Unclear at this point. Regardless, Beltran wasn't subjected to qualifying offer by virtue of getting traded during season, so signing team won't have to cough up first-round pick.

Sandy Alderson was asked Tuesday why Tim Tebow seems to elicit such strong reactions -- positive and negative -- from fans. "I'm not surprised," Alderson replied. "We have a polarized society, if you haven't noticed. Tim might be another lightning rod."

Yankees GM Brian Cashman acknowledged teams being interested in trading for catcher Brian McCann given the emergence of Gary Sanchez. Still, Sandy Alderson didn't sound keen on doing any deal with the Yankees. "I wouldn't say there was an extra obstacle, but it's probably not the first call I'd make," Alderson said with a laugh Tuesday.

Despite team officials acknowledging a bone spur in Noah Syndergaard's pitching elbow this past summer, Mets doctors determined the ace did not need to have it removed -- even after the season. GM Sandy Alderson expressed confidence Tuesday that the issue is really a non-issue and predicted it will not become a topic for discussion again in 2017. "I think this one is so insignificant in the eyes of the physicians," Alderson said. "It was probably blown a little bit out of proportion last year, which tends to happen around the Mets." It's regarded as so little an issue that Syndergaard is expected to participate for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic in March.

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Sandy Alderson said he expects to speak with Neil Walker's agent before departing Scottsdale, Arizona, on Thursday. That further signals the Mets are entertaining multiyear offers with Walker, since the Mets already have a one-year, $17.2 million qualifying offer on the table. Walker has until Monday to accept or reject the qualifying offer.
