NJ 2-1-1 HURRICANE RESPONSE AND RECOVERY
Hurricane Sandy Recovery in Full Force
Throughout the state, recovery efforts are well underway. On this page and those linked to it you will find information about FEMA assistance and how to apply; clean-up resources and local recovery efforts. NJ 2-1-1 staff is in direct contact with VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Assisting in Disaster) and state and local government officials. As we learn of resources we will post to this site. Our resource specialists are available to assist you as well.
See the most recent State EOC Situation Report - this report will provide information on roadway closures, mass transit, shelter capacity numbers (for locations see our listing below) and emergency situations throughout the state.
There is a lot of misinformation circulating on social networks. Go to the FEMA Hurricane Sandy webpage and scroll down to the rumor control section for an on-going list of rumors and their true or false status.
Use Social Media to find Gas, Business Openings, Charging Stations
New Jersey residents are using the #njgas tag on Twitter to share what gas stations are open and information about the lines. People also are hunting for places where they can charge cellular phones and mobile devices so they can stay connected. Libraries are one option, but the malls are another. They're also able to use free wireless in the malls. Like with gas information, New Jersey residents are using the #njopen hashtag on Twitter to share information on what businesses are open and if they have charging and wireless access.
Call 2-1-1
If you have a need and you don't know where to turn, dial 2-1-1 and we will do our best to find the community resource that will help. NJ 2-1-1 is keeping track of all of the needs expressed by callers and we are in contact with agencies and services in all of the affected areas. If we can't find resources to direct you to when you call, we will do our best to find an answer and call you back.
Road Conditions and Public Transportation
To find the most current information on coastal evacuation routes, road conditions throughout the storm and public transportation closings, go to 511NJ. We will post as alerts come in from government officials.
Visit the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey website for an update on current conditions at area airports, PATH service, tunnel and bridge closures, bus terminals, ports and all of the latest pertinent news.

Safe Transport of Gasoline - Only UL listed containers designed to transport gasoline may be used. The use of any other container to transport gasoline puts everyone's life in danger.
RxResponse will activate an online service in the afternoon on 10.29.12 which will inform people of all registered pharmacies that are open during the hurricane. The service works by tracking pharmacies that have submitted electronic prescription billing activity in the previous 24 hours. Find out which pharmacies are open in your area.
Outage Updates
Drinking Water Advisories
Power outages have occurred in many municipalities as a result of storm waters. Public Water Utilities in these areas are recommending specific safety precautions be taken to be sure that the water is safe for drinking, cooking, bathing and washing. To find out what is recommended in your area, contact your local municipality or call your water company.
If you get your water from a private well, flush the well until the water is clear and free of sediment. To do this, attach a hose to an outside spigot and turn the water on. After the water is clear, then test the well for coliform bacteria. Do not drink the water until it has been tested if your well was under floodwater or if the water was dirty or cloudy when you turned it on.
Use bottled or boiled water until the testing can be done. To properly boil water, bring water to a rolling boil and hold it there for one minute. Let it cool and use as needed for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, washing hands and for your pets.
Call your local health department for information on disinfecting private wells.
Boil Water Advisories in Effect
Boil Water Advisories change with every passing day. To get the most current information on BWA, road closures, county conditions, and more read the NJOEM Alerts and Updates.
Food Assistance
For the time being, assistance through the SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps) Program is only available to current SNAP recipients. If you received food stamps before the storm and live in an area where over 50% of the population was without power you will receive a reimbursement of 25 percent of your October monthly SNAP allotment, allowing you to replace a portion of the food you may have lost during the power outage.
You must live in one of these counties to be eligible for automatic reimbursement: Atlantic, Bergen, Cape May, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren. If you do, you will receive the following benefits:
- SNAP replacement benefit of 25% automatically within the next few weeks on your EBT card. You do not need to call or visit your county welfare agency. The reimbursement will take place automatically.
- The prepared food waiver also allows you, for a limited time, to purchase hot and cold prepared meals from participating stores with your benefits, an exception to the SNAP rules.
Help is available to SNAP recipients living in the remaining counties. Individuals and families on SNAP from the counties of Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem also are eligible for the replacement benefit, but must go to their county welfare office to apply. If you live in one of these counties you are not eligible for the hot food benefit.
Disaster Food Stamps (DSNAP) are not yet available in New Jersey. Additionally, the rumor about FEMA providing $300 food vouchers is not true. If you are in need of food, visit End Hunger NJ where you will find a food pantry in your area.
Some food pantries and soup kitchens in Ocean and Monmouth counties have been closed due to damage sustained by the storm. Find an open food pantry or soup kitchen in Ocean County. Find an open food pantry or soup kitchen in Monmouth County. Operational hours may have changed and supplies may be limited so be sure to call before you go to verify details. You will need an ID to prove residency and will be asked to declare that you were affected by the disaster.

Missing Pets
The New Jersey Department of Agriculture has been working with the state Office of Emergency Management, U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to help dogs, cats and other pets and owners in need. A hotline for residents affected by Hurricane Sandy who left their pets behind when evacuating their homes in advance of the storm has now been opened. The phone number to call is 1-855-407-4787 (1-855-407-HSUS).
Those who call the hotline will be asked for information to assist animal rescue teams in locating the animals and bringing them safely to a shelter. The hotline is available 24 hours a day.
Long-Term Housing Needs as a Result of Storm
The Supportive Housing Association of NJ has a bulletin board of emergency housing needs as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Click here to view listings. Food Safety and General Health Hotline
The Department of Health has opened a Hotline for food safety and mold removal, general health issues related to the storm including, but not limited to food safety. You may reach the hotline by dialing 2-1-1 and following the prompt or you may dial the hotline directly 1-866-234-0964. List yourself as safe and well on the American Red Cross Safe and Well website. If you have been affected by a disaster, this website provides a way for you to register yourself as “safe and well.” From a list of standard messages, you can select those that you want to communicate to your family members, letting them know of your well-being. Concerned family and friends can search the list of those who have registered themselves as “safe and well.” The results of a successful search will display a loved one’s First Name, Last Name, an “As of Date”, and the “safe and well” messages selected.
Next of Kin National Registry - Register with, or search, this emergency contact system if you have been displaced or someone you know is missing.
International Evacuees and Foreign Nationals - If you are a tourist or other foreign national and cannot reach family members directly, contact your consulate.
Emotional Support
Crisis counselors will provide outreach and education services about coping with the emotional difficulties in the aftermath of emergencies such as these. Stress can surface in many forms and often appears weeks or months after a traumatic event. It may include anger, fatigue, loss of appetite, sleeplessness, nightmares, depression, inability to concentrate, hyperactivity and/or increased alcohol or drug use. If you or someone you know is experiencing distress or feeling overwhelmed by painful emotions related to recent events, call the New Jersey MentalHealthCares' Disaster Helpline: 1-877-294-4357 (HELP). A TTY line is available at (877) 294-4356. Translation services are available as well.
Teens troubled by all that is happening around them can reach out to the 2NDFLOOR - a confidential and anonymous helpline for NJ's youth and young adults ranging in age from 10 to 24. It is open 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. Youth can either call the helpline using a toll-free number, 888-222-2228, or access the interactive website. Calls to the 2NDFLOOR youth helpline are anonymous and confidential except in life-threatening situations.
The service is designed for listening, helping and guiding youth with their concerns. The phone lines are staffed by licensed professionals and trained volunteers (who are closely supervised and guided by social workers and professional counselors.) Hearing impaired callers, can reach 2NDFLOOR at the following TTY number: 732-264-1703.
