NOTE: Firms listed on this page have notified the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) that they provide value-added services related to data reported to BTS by the air carriers. BTS does not endorse or recommend firms.
BTS provides free downloads of unrestricted airline data from the BTS BOOKSTORE, including a public version of the Origin and Destination Survey, the Data Bank 28 (Domestic Segment, Domestic Market, International Segment and International Market) Traffic data from the Form 41 Schedules T-100 and T-100f.
BTS makes available airline data reported to the bureau in air carrier statistical and financial reports. These data are prepared by BTS and can be downloaded free from the BTS BOOKSTORE. Available for free download are: electronic copies of the "Green Book" of Air Carrier Traffic Statistics (Monthly), the "Yellow Book" of Air Carrier Financial Statistics (Quarterly), the "Blue Book" of Air Carrier Industry Scheduled Service Traffic Statistics (Quarterly), Part 234 ASQP On Time/Delay Data, the Data Bank 28 (Domestic Segment, Domestic Market, International Segment and International Market) Traffic data from the Form 41 Schedules T-100 and T-100f and a public version of the Origin and Destination Survey. The “restricted” versions of the Origin and Destination Survey and T100 International Traffic data are available for a fee upon approval. Please go to Restricted Data for more information.
Air Carrier Financial Statistics (Yellow Book) contains quarterly airline financial statistics obtained from carrier reports to DOT on BTS Form 41 financial schedules. Effective with a rule (ER-1297) adopted July 1982, the filing frequency for income statement and balance sheet data was changed from quarterly to semiannually for medium regional carriers with annual operating revenues under $10 million. Semiannual financial data for these carriers appear as a supplement in June and December issues of this publication. Classification of carriers within groupings is reviewed annually. When a carrier's frequency of filing financial data is changed because of reclassification, it may be necessary to use prior publications to obtain historical data. Data include income statement and balance sheet figures, in separate sections, by carrier entity for the most recent quarter and twelve-month period, and similar data for like periods in the previous year.
Air Carrier Industry Scheduled Service Traffic Statistics (Blue Book) incorporates the scheduled service activities of the Part 298 Small Certificated and Commuter Air Carriers with Large Certificate Medium Regionals into one group in one volume. It includes group totals for Large Certificated Air Carrier groupings. The data are obtained from the carrier reports on either Form 41, Schedule T-1(a) or Form 298-C, Schedules A-1 and T-1. Only Scheduled Service statistics are presented, since the Part 298 exemption authority air carriers report only their Scheduled Service traffic. Only system Scheduled Service totals are presented for each carrier, since the Form 298-C, Schedule A-1, does not give a domestic and international breakout. Data consist of passenger and cargo capacities and traffic actually carried in Scheduled Service for Medium Regional carriers (including Commuters), and summary tables for all carrier groups for the most recent quarter and twelve-month period, and similar data for like periods in previous years.
Air Carrier Traffic Statistics (Green Book) contains monthly airline operating statistics for more than 100 large certificated air carriers, based on data reported to DOT by carriers holding a certificate issued under Section 401 of the Federal Aviation Act of 1958 (now codified in the U.S. Code) which operate aircraft designed for maximum seating capacity of more than 60 seats or a maximum payload capacity of more than 18,000 pounds, or which conduct international operations. The data consist of passenger and cargo capacities and traffic actually carried, by carrier geographic entity (such as Domestic, Latin America, Atlantic and Pacific) and class of service in both Scheduled and Nonscheduled (or charter) Service for the most recent month and twelve-month period, and similar data for like periods in the previous year. Data are summarized by carrier entity (D, L, A and P) and carrier group (major, national, etc.)
Airport Activity Statistics of Certificated Route Air Carriers, 199x (where x is the current year, with about a year delay; for instance, calendar year 1996 data were published in 1997) contains the volume of revenue passengers, freight and mail traffic handled by the nation's Large Certificated Air Carriers at each airport service during the 12-months ending December 31, of the year of the report. In addition, a presentation of aircraft departures is shown including detail by Aircraft Type for total departures performed in Scheduled, Nonscheduled and All-Services. The data are compiled from information reported to DOT by the Large Certificated Air Carriers. These carriers hold Certificates of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPN) issued by the DOT authorizing the performance of air transportation. Large Certificated Air Carriers operate aircraft with seating capacity of more than 60 seats or a maximum payload capacity of more than 18,000 pounds or conduct international operations. Data for Commuters, intra-state, nonscheduled air taxi operators, and foreign flag air carriers are not included in this publication.
This file contains data as reported by participating air carriers from the continuous 10% sample of airline tickets where a ticket contains ONLY domestic points/airports. It includes the full itinerary and the dollar amounts paid by each passenger. The data are summarized by routing and fare paid. DOT posts the mileage for each itinerary segment, applies a numeric code identifying each city/airport, and a world area code to indicate the state/country.

Carriers with one percent or more of total domestic scheduled service passenger revenues are required to report data for their flights involving any airport in the 48 contiguous states that account for one percent or more of domestic scheduled service passenger enplanements. The regulation also provides for the voluntary reporting of a carrier's entire domestic system and voluntary reporting by other carriers. The reporting carriers have uniformly elected to report their total domestic system operations. Some of the data elements included are: departure, arrival and elapsed flight times as shown by the Office Airline Guide (OAG), the carrier's computer reservations system (CRS), the carrier's actual performance; selected differences among the three sources, such as delay and elapsed time difference; and the causes of delays.
This file contains data reported by U.S. carriers operating between airports located within the boundaries of the United States and its territories. These data are often referred to as either "Market" or "On-Flight O&D" records. These data fields contain information on passengers, freight and/or mail enplaned at the origin airport and deplaned at the destination airport. Each monthly release contains 12 months of data.
This file contains data reported by U.S. carriers operating nonstop between airports located within the boundaries of the United States and its territories. These data fields contain information by aircraft type and service class for departures performed, available capacity and seats, passengers transported, freight and mail transported, scheduled departures, and aircraft hours ramp-to-ramp and airborne. Each monthly release contains 12 months of data.
International Market Data are subject to access restrictions. These data are often referred to as either "Market" or "On-Flight O&D" records. The data fields contain information on passengers, freight and/or mail enplaned at the origin airport and deplaned at the destination airport. There are two data banks created from international market data. One contains only U.S. and foreign air carrier data where one point is within the a U.S. state or territory and the other point is foreign (outside the U.S. and its territories); this data bank is held confidential for six months after the report date. The second data bank contains the same data plus U.S. air carrier data between two foreign points; these data are held confidential for three years after the report date. (See Restricted Data section for more information.)

Annually, OAI provides a calendar year tape of O&D and T-100 data (and formerly SSD data) to NARA.
To obtain the tapes, contact NARA at (301) 713-6645. O&D data banks DB1A and DB2A are subject to release restrictions; for further information, contact OAI at oai-support@bts.gov.
Currently, all domestic SSD is a public file, since the domestic SSD were only restricted for 12 months. SSD data collection ended 12/31/89, concurrently with the inception of the T-100 data collection on 1/1/90. The Domestic Form 41 Schedule T-100 data are not restricted, and are available to the public upon completion of the monthly processing.
International T-100 and T-100F detail reports by U.S. and foreign air carriers are generally restricted for six-months. U.S. air carrier data between foreign points are restricted for thr ee years. A pamphlet on restricted release data is available from oai-support@bts.gov.
