EDUCATION IS THE KEY --- KNOW THE FACTS
FACT: Mental stress releases hormones that—in some cases--alter the brain’s metabolism and its ability to function well, leading to psychological injuries or illnesses.
FACT: If not managed properly, stress reactions can lead to disabling stress injuries and illnesses that can seriously harm a person.
FACT: A psychologically unfit Sailor or Marine is a danger to himself or herself, as well as to shipmates and fellow Marines.
FACT: A large percentage of stress injuries can be treated by such simple measures as getting rest and talking with a trusted supporter, such as a chaplain, corpsman or a buddy.
FACT: All branches of the military now put as much emphasis on psychological fitness as they do on physical fitness. A broad range of resources is available around the clock to assist any service member with a psychological health problem.
FACT: A stress injury or illness does not automatically mean that a Sailor or Marine is unfit for duty or deployment. Service members who have had counseling and treatment usually recover and return to full duty.
FACT: All branches of the armed forces emphasize that it is a sign of strength—not a weakness--to seek help for psychological health problems.
