Angela Sherbenou, OFDA senior humanitarian advisor and civilian/military advisor to U.S. Africa Command, leads a presentation during the Joint Humanitarian Operations Course May 22-23, 2012. The course, offered twice annually to U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command, provides a high-level overview of the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), USAID's arm for foreign disaster response. Of the 70 some disasters that OFDA responds to each year, about 10 percent involve the U.S. military in some role. The JHOC course is designed to build relationships and explain the disaster response process before such an event occurs.

The APS international staff will train for 12 days covering topics such as outreach programs, staff structure and the finalization of deployment details. The international representatives will make up the core of the 2011 APS staff and include 32 personnel from Cameroon, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Togo, United Kingdom and United States.
