Theodore Ellyson becomes the first naval officer sent to flight training on this day in #NavalHistory. Also, the schooner Enterprise captures the Turkish ketch Mastico and Capt. Thomas Catesby Jones and King Kamehameha negotiate the first treaty between Hawaii and a foreign power. #HistoryMatters

#OTD in 1803, the schooner Enterprise, commanded by Lt. Stephen Decatur, captures the Turkish ketch Mastico as it is sailing from Tripoli to Constantinople under Turkish colors and without passports. Renamed Intrepid, the ex-Mastico is taken into U.S. service.

#OTD in 1841, the #USNavy’s first ocean-going side-wheel steam ship, the Mississippi, is commissioned at Philadelphia, Pa. It becomes Commodore Matthew C. Perry’s flagship during the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854.
