Project detail
Roadmap/Focus area(s):   Infrastructure Research and Technology Strategic Plan and Roadmap
Project Description:   This project will build ten test pavements with different quantities of Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP), different warm-mix asphalt (WMA) technologies, and different production temperatures. The relative ranking in fatigue cracking as well as supporting laboratory characterization will guide the recommendation.
Goals:   The key project objective is to quantify the cracking resistance of high Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) mixtures that considers the use of lower temperature production with warm-mix asphalt (WMA) and recommend any limitations for combining the two technologies.
Product Type:   Draft standard, specifications, or guidelines
Research report
Test Methodology:   Full-scale accelerated pavement testing, laboratory tests and experimental design, test protocol development, ruggedness study, develop precision, and bias statements.
Expected Benefits:   New protocol for evaluating high Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) asphalt mixtures and determining RAP limits and binder performance grade needs.
Deliverables: Name: Protocol for evaluating Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) mixtures using Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) test method.
Product Type(s): Research report, Draft standard, specifications, or guidelines
Description: The deliverable is a test protocol in American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) draft format that uses the Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) equipment to determine the virgin binder performance grade, or limiting Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) content for asphalt mixtures containing high RAP in warm-mix asphalt (WMA).
