Technology Operations and Infrastructure

Overview

Providing direct services to DOT customers is critical and IT Shared Services has transformed its multiple infrastructures into a Common Operating Environment (COE) servicing the entire department, exclusive of the FAA. The COE eliminates redundant services and improves overall service and security levels by standardizing and maintaining a controlled environment. IT Shared Services institutionalizes new methodologies and processes while improving overall program performance and ensuring continuous customer satisfaction and process improvement. Services to COE users include:

Computing Services

The OCIO provides data center operations for COE equipment as well as hosting and housing services for OA’s for web sites, applications, and databases; network design, engineering, and management of the campus area network; directory and electronic messaging administration and services; 7X24 network monitoring to ensure continuity of operations; network and system security to protect data and devices; and storage management and support. All of these services are delivered based on IT best practices and managed via rigorous change and release management controls.

Network Infrastructure

The OCIO maintains the Network Infrastructure serving the departments Common Operating Environment (COE). These services are leveraged throughout the department to assure the users have a reliable, highly available, secure and scalable network to perform the mission’s functions. The network Infrastructure is inclusive of premise equipment and software, cabling infrastructure to include data and telephony circuits providing the logical interconnectivity (both wired and wireless) between multiply devices. Providing LAN/WAN connectivity in the environment, managing the configurations, IP address schemes, routing tables and VPN connections are all part of the management with in this service area
