The Hawaii Department of Transportation is responsible to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain State facilities in all modes of transportation, including air, water, and land. Coordination with other State, County, and Federal programs is maintained in order to achieve these objectives.

Kalanianaole Highway Resurfacing Project

Work has begun on the Kalanianaole Highway Resurfacing Project, a major New Day Work Project that, once complete, will provide a safe and smooth driving route for East Honolulu motorists. In addition to reconstruction and resurfacing of 21 lane miles of roadway from West Hind Drive to the vicinity of Hanauma Bay Road, the project will also including utility maintenance and upgrades, road marking installations, guardrail repairs, and landscaping and irrigation improvements.

Work has begun on the Kamehameha Highway Resurfacing Project, a major New Day Work Project that, once complete, will provide a safe and smooth driving route for Central Oahu motorists. This project will repair 13.7 lane miles of roadway on Kamehameha Highway from the vicinity of Ka Uka Boulevard to the vicinity of Waihau Street. The existing roadway was last resurfaced in 1991, but has been maintained through a consistent maintenance program throughout the past 23 years. In addition to resurfacing and reconstruction, the project will include guardrail safety improvements, traffic signal safety modifications, pedestrian safety improvements, utility modifications, landscaping and new signage.

Airport Viaduct Deck Repair Project Map
Work has begun on the H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct for approximately 94,000 square feet of concrete deck repairs. Weakened portions of the deck will be removed and replaced with a fast-setting concrete, and sealed with a concrete overlay. Roadwork also includes expansion joint repairs and pavement striping. The project, consisting primarily of weekend work, will preserve and prolong the life of the Airport Viaduct. Lanes under the Airport Viaduct on Nimitz Highway will be temporarily closed while deck demolition and reconstruction is happening above. Vineyard Boulevard Resurfacing Project
Work has begun on the Vineyard Boulevard Resurfacing Project between Palama Street to the H-1 Freeway On-Ramp. The project, which requires lane closures and primarily takes place between 8:30 – 3:30 p.m., will extend the life of the existing roadway, enhance driving safety and improve the surface condition of Vineyard Boulevard. Improvements will include reconstructing weakened pavement areas, replacing damaged curbs, gutters and sidewalks, installing new bus pads and loop detectors and replacing existing traffic signal heads with new, energy-efficient, LED optical units. H-1 Freeway Westbound Improvements
Work is underway to rebuild deteriorated parts of the H-1 viaducts in the Pearl City and Waimalu areas. Concrete sections are being demolished and fast-drying cement is poured overnight and on Sundays. Work will include widening of the H-1 westbound between the Pearl City and Waipahu exits to add an auxiliary lane, along with restriping from the Aiea Pedestrian Overpass to the Pearl City exit to add an additional westbound auxiliary lane. Hawaii’s Legal Presence Law
Legal presence requirements affect anyone applying for a Hawaii driver’s license, including U.S. citizens and foreign-born applicants, those applying for a learner’s permit, and permit holders passing their road test to obtain a driver’s license. Legal presence also applies to anyone who has just moved to Hawaii from another state or country, and anyone renewing their Hawaii driver’s license or permit.
