• Elephant Butte Dam Turns 100

  On October 19, 2016, the Bureau of Reclamation celebrated 100 years since the completion of Elephant Butte Dam in southern New Mexico. Officials from Reclamation, the International Boundary and Water Commission, State of New Mexico, New Mexico’s Congressional Delegation, Elephant Butte Irrigation District and El Paso County Water Improvement District No. 1 marked the event during a ceremony near the base of the dam.   Bureau of Reclamation Science and Technology Investments Total $10.9 Million in 2017

  One of the ways Reclamation is working to ensure a sustainable water supply in the Western United States is its investment in science and technology. In fiscal year 2017, Reclamation is investing $10.9 million for 174 new and continuing internal research projects.   Corps and Reclamation Release Final Environmental Impact Statement for Lower Yellowstone Fish Passage

  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and Bureau of Reclamation have released the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Lower Yellowstone Intake Diversion Dam Fish Passage Project located 70-miles upstream from the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers near Glendive, Montana. • Robert Skordas Named Deputy Regional Director for Reclamation’s Pacific Northwest Region

  

  Regional Director Lorri Lee has selected Rob Skordas as the new Deputy Regional Director for Power and Infrastructure in Reclamation’s Pacific Northwest Region. Skordas began his new position October 17. Skordas was previously the Lower Colorado Dams Area Manager where he directed business and maintenance activities at Hoover Dam, Davis Dam, and Parker Dam. He began his federal career in 1999 as an Apprentice Powerplant Operator at Grand Coulee Dam. Since completing his apprenticeship, Rob has assumed increasingly challenging leadership and management positions in Reclamation’s Mid-Pacific and Lower Colorado regions. Read More →

  Reclamation Seeks Comments on Draft Criteria for Three WaterSMART Funding Opportunities

  The Bureau of Reclamation is seeking comments on draft evaluation criteria for three grant categories within the WaterSMART Program, including two within WaterSMART Grants and one within the Cooperative Watershed Management Program. Under WaterSMART Grants, Reclamation is proposing to update the Water and Energy Efficiency Grants evaluation criteria and launch a new funding opportunity for Small-Scale Water Efficiency Projects. It is also seeking comments on evaluation criteria and eligible project types for Phase II of the Cooperative Watershed Management Program. Read More →

• Whooshh: Fish Passage Experiment at Roza Dam

  The Yakama Nation Fisheries tested the Whooshh Innovations fish passage system this summer at the Bureau of Reclamation’s Roza Diversion Dam. The Tribe and Reclamation are working together to research fish passage for dams in the Yakima Basin as part of the Yakima Integrated Water Resource Management Plan. A tube transport system like the Whooshh might be a good solution for getting adult salmon back into reservoirs. Learn More →
