NEW TO OKINAWA?
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR DoDD SCHOOLS

1. Where will my child go to school?
Your housing location will determine your school zone. Once you accept housing on or off base, the housing office or the Student Transportation Office can assist you with verifying the school your child/children will attend.

2. How do I register my child?
Once you know your school zone, you should contact that particular school for a registration packet. If you have already completed some of the paperwork, take it with you. Remember to bring a copy of your lease (off-base – obtained from your housing agency) or housing verification letter (on-base – obtained from the DoD Family Housing Office). You do not need to be physically living in the house at the time of registration.

3. When will my child begin school?
Please allow 2 days for processing, once the registration packet has been completed and all required documents have been turned in to the school.

4. How soon can I register my child?
You may start the registration process online, visit DoDDS Okinawa website at http://www.dodea.edu/Pacific/Okinawa for more information and to download forms. Having much of that completed will speed your registration process when you arrive.

5. Can I enroll my child before I have accepted housing?
While in temporary lodging on Kadena AB, you may register your child at BHPS, AEIS, KMS or KDHS; Camp Foster will be at ECK, LMS, KBHS. Camp Courtney will be at BES, RMS, KBHS. You may have to change once you have accepted housing if the house is not within the same school zone.

6. What if I have a child on an IEP?
Please be sure to inform the registrar and take with you a current copy of the IEP upon registration. All DoD schools on Okinawa have special education programs for mild to moderate disabilities, while only certain schools provide specialized programs for moderate to severe disability. He/she may attend different schools if services require. Transportation is available.

7. Is there a gifted education program? Yes. Teachers or parents may refer a child for evaluation.

8. When can my child begin Kindergarten?
Students must turn 5 years of age by 1 September to enroll in kindergarten.

9. Are there pre-school programs available?
DoDDS has a program called Sure Start which is a preschool program for students who turn 4 years old by 1 September. Sure Start requires an application which can be picked up at any elementary school between April and August. Applications are scored against a comprehensive rubric and class lists are created in mid August. There is only one Sure Start class per elementary school. There are several off base pre schools available as well as the on base CDC programs.
