State Command Sergeant Major, Command Sgt. Maj. James R. Gordon

Command Sgt. Maj. James R. GordonCommand Sergeant Major James R. Gordon assumed duties as the 6th Indiana National Guard State Command Sergeant Major/Senior Enlisted Leader in 2013. CSM Gordon has spent over 33 years with the US Army/Army National Guard serving in a variety of positions from Infantryman to Command Sergeant Major.

As State Command Sergeant Major, Gordon serves as the principal enlisted advisor to the Adjutant General of Indiana, on all Soldier and Airman related matters. Together they oversee the training of approximately 15,000 Indiana National Guardsmen both in Army and Air. CSM Gordon’s primary focus as the senior enlisted leader is to provide leadership and guidance to ensure Soldier, Airman and Family readiness at all times.

He graduated from Logansport High School in 1980 and from Oakland City University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources Management. CSM Gordon began his military career in 1980, joining the United States Army. He served as an Infantryman and Team Leader with the 1st/75th Ranger Battalion and then later with the 1st/48th Infantry in Germany. CSM Gordon joined the Indiana National Guard in 1985 serving as a Team Leader and Operations SGT with the 151st LRS (Airborne) where he served both as traditional and AGR. While serving 18 years as AGR, CSM Gordon worked as a Unit Administrator, Unit Readiness NCO, Bn Ops NCO, Bde Ops NCO and Div Ops NCO.

CSM Gordon has held leadership positions from team leader up to Division CSM that includes HHC 76 Bde (Sep)First Sergeant, 2-152 IN, Command Sergeant Major, 76 Bde (Sep), TF Afghan National Army III Command Sergeant Major, and 38 Division, Command Sergeant Major.
