Midwest electricity supply and demand balance for 9/29 and 9/28 seems to have an error - interchange MWhs jump up by 2 orders of magnitude just for those two days. I can't find the evidence supporting this background.

Thanks for pointing this out. Louisville Gas & Electric (LGEE) submitted anomalously high values for total interchange for 9/28/and 9/30. We are having them submit corrected data.

I am curious about some anomalous values for aggregated regional demand and generation. For instance, for the Florida region, at 9/3/2016 18:00 EDT, the Demand value is 54538MW, which is an increase of 17GW from the previous hour, and not equal to the sum of the BA's. I believe this has something to do with the fact that FPL did not report demand for this hour, however I am wondering why the number is too large, rather than simply missing the FPL value, and wanted to make sure you were aware of the error.

Regarding the Balancing authority forecast error chart for BA BPAT, the current hour always shows a high percentage error that corrects itself in following hours. For example, here is some downloaded data: 09/6/2016 12H EDT 45.92 09/6/2016 11H EDT 3.54 09/6/2016 10H EDT 3.39

Bonneville Power Administration (BPAT) and some other balancing authorities reflect commercial arrangements in their reporting of system energy in the normal course of business. For EIA-930 reporting, we have asked BAs to report system energy derived solely from metered values without adjustments. However, we have not asked them to adjust their demand forecast to reflect this. Therefore, these BAs may show persistent forecast errors. In these cases, the forecast error is not meaningful.(More information can be found here)

The units on the demand-supply balance graph for peak demand are listed as megawatthours. Shouldn't they be listed as megawatts?

For hourly data there is really no difference between megawatt and megawatt-hour. We choose to use megawatt-hour because this is a unit of energy, whereas megawatt is a unit of capacity. Also, when we present the data as time aggregates such as daily or weekly, the correct unit is megawatt-hour. So we use megawatt-hour for hourly data to maintain a consistent unit.

We have been trying to compile NYISO data for statewide and "zone" specific illustrations in order to better inform elected officials on this technical market. This looks promising because we are also interested in interconnections to and flows between other markets. Will this site have more granular data (zone specific) for each node (specifically NYISO)?

Yes, the Balancing Authority (BA)  forecasts are reported by each individual BA.

Great minds think alike.  Your suggestion hits on two future upgrades we're evaluating:  1. Greater data resolution from some of the larger balancing authorities, and 2. breaking down generation by fuel source (nat gas, coal, etc).  Some of that information is available in our Electricity Data Browser (http://www.eia.gov/electricity/data/browser/), although not on an hourly basis.   We're working on it, and thanks!

An excellent picture of our grid - great resource. However, use of the word 'demand' for accumulated energy consumption (megawatt hours)as well as total instantaneous, or peak, power production (megawatts)is confusing. I'd suggest you reserve the use of the word 'demand' for describing the generation capacity at any particular time.

Thanks for writing in.   We do have some data on carbon dioxide in our Monthly Energy Review.   We're trying to secure plant-level data for CO2, but we don't have anything ready for the public yet.  Stay tuned!

Currently, we are collecting data only for the whole balancing authority system. EIA is proposing to add collection of hourly actual demand by balancing authority sub-regions in 2018.

Thanks.  Downloaded data is expressed in the time zone you've selected.  (You'll see the first column indicates EDT, PDT, and so on).   To change the time zone of your data, click on one of the four clocks at the top of the Status Map.

We've only been collecting this information a short time.   Unfortunately, July 1, 2015 is the earliest complete data set we have available.

This is a very nice visualization and is very helpful in explaining energy use across the US. Another layer that would be great would be to show the production sources of electricity by BA. How much is coal, gas, nuclear, hydro, and other RE.

Currently, net generation values are not broken down by energy source. EIA is proposing to collect this breakdown in 2018.

The visualizations are excellent. Please consider an optional layer that shows the tie-line ratings. You'd scroll over the line on the map and a databox would pop up with the line rating (Total Transmission Capacity, Thermal Rating). A download management page would also be nice - i.e. a page where you could specify which BAs you want what data for and the time-frame you were interested in. You probably have this... I can't find the path to it is all. Maybe make it more prominent.

Avista has sampled data via the “Download Data” option and compared it to the data submitted to the EIA in our Daily file. Based on my assessment, the data available for download is the same data that Avista has submitted. The web page is easy to use and the Walkthrough is helpful in explaining the two hour time lag for demand data. The user options are reasonably intuitive. I found the “Download Data” option useful for comparing Avista’s data presented on the beta web page to our submitted Daily file.

How do you download data from more than 5 days ago? Everything here seems to be limited to the last five days.

Clicking the date, on the right side of the page above the map, enables a calendar dropdown allowing you to change the time period that is displayed. On the Detail Data page, select the table tab to see a data table. Data series download options are available in the Download dropdown in the upper right hand corner of the table.

Its a start. Show forecast error at each bus. Show transmission flows between buses(capacity, constraint level and direction of flow. Show wind and PV gen at each bus. Publish a definitive, exhaustive list of generators within each NEMS region and each RTO (in 860)

The EIA-930 collection does not currently collect operating data by bus. EIA-860 data currently list the BA for each power plant.
