Project detail
Roadmap/Focus area(s):   Infrastructure Research and Technology Strategic Plan and Roadmap
Project Description:   Various asphalts will be characterized (elemental analysis, spectroscopic characterization, solvent dissolution) and a model will be developed for predicting the phase behavior of mixes. The second phase of work will separate large quantities of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and reclaimed asphalt shingle (RAS) binders using ionic liquids.
Goals:   Predict phase behavior (compatibility) of asphalts obtained from various sources, including materials extracted from reclaimed asphalt pavement and recycled asphalt shingles.
Background Information:   Previous work resulted in development of a guide for determining solubility parameters.
Product Type:   Research report
Test Methodology:   Spectroscopic characterization of asphalts, asphalt additives, and asphalt components using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR).
Expected Benefits:   Guide for evaluating the propensity for asphalt and asphalt additive (modifier, reclaimed asphalt pavements, reclaimed asphalt shingles, etc.) to blend. This will aid in understanding "black rock" issues using recycled products.
Deliverables: Name: Asphalt Compatibility Model
Product Type(s): Research report
Description: Model for predicting miscibility of asphalt and asphalt components.
