Project detail
Roadmap/Focus area(s):   Infrastructure Research and Technology Strategic Plan and Roadmap
Project Description:   The project has three phases: phase I shall consist of identifying appropriate sensing technology, data recording and processing equipment, and making a mockup to verify the measurement system configuration. Phase II will be a followup project to transfer the technology from the laboratory to the field. An appropriate bridge platform shall be identified for this field study in the future by the Federal Highway Administration based on the recommendation from phase I. Phase III will include additional field testing, collection of field data, and modification of sensors and algorithms as needed. In addition, nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques suitable for field application will be evaluated.
Goals:   The key project objectives are to develop and deploy innovative nondestructive testing (NDT) technologies (Direct Sensing Method) for detecting corrosion damage, and installing corrosion sensing technologies to monitor the internal environment of the main suspension cables (Indirect Sensing Method).
Product Type:   Research report
Test Methodology:   The test approach is evaluation of various nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques and the type of sensors in the laboratory for deploying in the field.
Expected Benefits:   The expected benefit is long-lasting suspension bridges.
Deliverables: Name: Report
Product Type(s): Research report
Description: The deliverable is a report containing the performance data for sensors and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques.
